Vocal Technique sessions will be available with Jeremy
Backhouse during normal session time. These will take the
form of brief consultations - about 10 minutes - in groups of
five or six.
Music is provided free of charge, but please bring your own
copies of any scheduled music if you own it.
Drinks and snacks. Please bring your own packed lunch and
refreshments. Coffee and tea will be provided during the
morning and afternoon breaks.

PROGRAMME
WORKS
During the day singers will study and perform movements
from Parry’s ‘Songs of Farewell’ and ‘Tchaikovsky’s
‘Crown of Roses’ with Ralph Allwood. Singers will have
the opportunity to sing in smaller, chamber groups, concentrating more on vocal technique, with David Lowe. There
will also be opportunities for more individual vocal tuition
with Jeremy Backhouse.
STAFF
Ralph Allwood is Precentor and Director of Music at Eton
College, as well as the Director of the Eton Choral Courses.
His workshop sessions are highly instructive and great fun.
He has recently conducted choral courses in Taiwan, Sydney,
Barcelona and Harvard University. He has been Musical

monic Choir. As an accompanist, he has worked extensively
with induvidual singers and instrumentalists and with such
groups as the BBC Singers and Corydon Singers. As a con-
cert pianist and organist, he has appeared extensively in this
country and abroad, as well as in festivals in London, Cambridge, Salisbury and Lichfield. He has performed concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Ireland, and
made a number of highly-praised recordings.
The Vasari Singers is one of the most versatile and popular
chamber choirs in the country. Since winning the prestigious
Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year competition in 1988, roadcast

on BBC Television, the choir has established an impressive
reputation as a group which performs to the very highest stan-
dards. Their musical and performing ability has been further
confirmed in a series of highly-acclaimed concerts throughout the country as well as a number of broadcasts and recordings.

David Lowe is Associate Conductor of the Cambridge
University Chamber Choir and Vocal Coach of the City of

Birmingham Symphony Chorus. His career as a tenor has
taken him worldwide and he is also much in demand as a
singing teacher and course tutor, for both of which he has
gained a considerable reputation throughout the country,
lecturing at the conventions of the NFMS and ABCD. He is
a Professor of singing at the Royal Academy of Music.
Jeremy Backhouse was appointed Chorus Master of
Guildford Philharmonic Choir in January 1995 and is the
Conductor of the Vasari Singers, one of Britain’s leading
chamber choirs. With them he has appeared throughout the
country and has won praise for many recordings, the latest
being nominated for a Gramophone Award. He also works
regularly with the BBC Singers, most recently in a programme
of Holst partsongs for Radio 3’s ‘Fairest Isle’ celebration.
