FOREWORD

WHEN I STARTED to plan the programmes for the 1965-66 season

the previous season was not over, and yet it was clear that it would

be the most successful season that the Corporation Concerts had
ever enjoyed. While preserving the general formula of last season
I have, in preparing this one, sought to introduce not only some
interesting unfamiliar works in the ‘enterprising’ series but one or
two works that have not been done in the concerts series in Guildford
by

older composers.

The

Dvorak

‘Serenade

in

D

minor’

and

Richard Strauss’ ‘Till Eulenspiegel’ are two such works.

Since the success of the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra’s
recording of the Bax Fourth Symphony a number of people connected with music are looking at our concert season with very great
interest to see how, when audiences elsewhere are so fickle, Guildford manages to maintain such a high average attendance no matter
what the concert programme. The immediate result with regard to
the

1965-66 season is twofold. The Dorking Halls Management

Committee have invited the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra to

open their concert season in the Dorking Halls on the 6th November
with a repertoire concert. This is a great pleasure for us and an
honour to know that we share a concert series with such orchestras

as the Royal Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. Secondly,
as the result of an exchange programme with Stadtische Jugend-

konzerte of Duisburg in Germany, we shall have Heinz Reinhart
Zilcher as distinguished guest conductor of the concert on 24th
October, while in May 1966 I shall go to Duisburg to conduct a
concert of English music.
The problem

of satisfying everybody’s tastes

in

a season

of

thirteen or fourteen concerts is a huge one, and I try to plan over
several years so as to make up for omitting important composers in
any one. Mozart was given a whole concert last year and Schubert’s
greatest Symphony performed. This year Schubert is missing, but

Richard

Strauss

appears.

The

Crossley

Clitheroe

Concert

in

January 1966 gives us the Brahms First Piano Concerto which has

not been heard in Guildford for several years, and the choirs perform
at least three works not heard in Guildford before. The Festival
Choir, who sang no English music last season, sings two of this
country’s great masterpieces. By the time this brochure appears, the

Proteus Choir will have returned from its tour of Germany, the

Surrey Advertiser
GUILDFORD 5252

main event of which will have been a recording of English music

for West Deutscher Rundfunk. In the first ‘enterprising’ concert of
the season the Proteus Choir will sing the Gloria, a work by the
neglected French composer, Poulenc. People will notice that the
name Philharmonic Choir is missing from the front of the brochure

and I hasten to explain that this is merely because that chorus is not

taking part in any of the series advertised. It is still very much in
existence, but is undergoing an entirely new programme of training
and will soon be producing concerts again. As usual, I have done

my best to include works that have been requested by a good number
of people, and the Elgar Violin Concerto and the Moeran G major
Serenade are cases in point.

SUNDAY, 26th SEPTEMBER, at 3 p.m.
The great work done by the Guildford Concertgoers’ Society (now

with a membership exceeding 1,100) in providing the Soloist’s fee
for the Crossley Clitheroe Concert and the fees for the increasingly

popular Concertgoers’ Members Evenings is a great spur to me to
explore the neglected areas of musical planning in this country

today. It is with the Concertgoers’ Society’s encouragement and
backing that the Corporation is able to help a number of young
English artists, and, as well as such

international celebrities as

Anievas, Fiorentino and Askenase, this concert season gives chances
to

brilliant

young English

artists

in

more

than

programmes.

Two years ago I made an appeal to the Guildford public to
support the ‘enterprising’ series of concerts, which were then and

are still so important for Guildford’s musical prestige. The response
to this plea has been so encouraging and enthusiastic that in fact
the ‘enterprising’ series are as well and sometimes better supported

SATURDAY, 9th OCTOBER, at 7.45 p.m.

than the repertoire or popular concerts. Since this has held true
through two seasons, I now wish to make a further plea, and that is

that having reached the average attendance of 86°, we now make
the effort to see that every concert in the series is full. In a town of
Guildford’s size this is possible and desirable, and no-one need
now fear the so-called ‘modern’ programme. The reception given
to the Bax Fourth Symphony in 1964 was a clear indication that

that large audience will return for the ‘enterprising’ concerts of

1965-66. If they bring their friends, the orchestra and I will do our

‘Symphonic Metamorphoses’, and surely they will profit in every
way from the experience of Holst’s ‘Hymn of Jesus’. The enthusiasm
in the orchestra and choirs has never been higher; the challenge

before them never greater. The sharing of this enthusiasm with a
growing audience is a happy aim.

About the Society

The Guildford Concertgoers Society was formed in 1949. Five years earlier
the Corporation of Guildford had founded a Municipal Orchestra under a
professional Director of Music; and the first (and still the single most important)
aim of the Society has been to support and promote interest in the concerts
sponsored by the Corporation. The latter is a generous patron of the Arts, but
the success of its policy depends on an enthusiastic response from the people who

benefit by it—that is, from everyone interested in this brochure. By its existence

and activities the Concertgoers Society proves that there is a keen and growing
demand for good music well performed. In this way we have over the years been
able to encourage the Corporation to continue and extend its own support for
such music.

The Society in addition gives more direct help. Corporation grants cover the
basic costs of the concerts and music administration, insofar as these cannot be
completely met by box office receipts. However, there are sometimes occasions
when an extra rehearsal, or extra soloists or orchestral players, are needed to
ensurea really first-class performance of some particularly difficult or demanding
work. The Society therefore raises money by various methods to provide a Fund
from which it can make grants to cover such exceptional items. In this way, for
example, a substantial contribution was made last year to help finance the first
recording to be made by the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. Again, through
this Fund members also provide two annual playing Scholarships with the

orchestra for promising young professional musicians, and pay for the fees of a

young soloist at the annual Crossley ClitheroeConcert. By joining the Society
you will be helping to sponsor such worthwhile activities.

However, as a member you will also receive certain more direct and tangible
benefits in exchange for your subscription. Apart from supporting the Corporation’s programme of concerts, the Society itself organises its own meetings
and social functions during the season: the programme for the 1965-66 season
is set out on the next page.
The current annual subscription is 2s. 6d. (or Is. for anyone under 18 years
of age). This covers:
1. Free admission to all members’ evenings of the Society.

2. An advance copy of this annual programme brochure.
3. Priority bookings for tickets to all Corporation concerts.

4. A copy of the monthly newsletter Nofes, keeping you in touch with local
musical events.

The Society also arranges other benefits for its members when the chance arises.

The Society now has well over 1,000 members. They are drawn not only from
Guildford and its immediate neighbourhood but from all over West Surrey and
even further afield. The Society is affiliated to the Surrey County Music Association and in turn one or two local music groups, such as the Horsley Music
Circle, are affiliated to the Society.
If you are not yet a member, or wish to renew your membership, please use the
slip on the next page (you may post it or hand it in at a concert or members
evening). If you are already a member, will you pass this form to a friend who is
not yet a member, with a recommendation from yourself—or perhaps even give
her or him a subscription as a present
?

The Hon. Secretary will always be glad to give you further information about

the Society. We welcome new members at any time.

JOHN DOWNHAM.
Chairman.
