FOREWORD
Survey Advertiser
IN MY PLANNING of programmes last season I made an effort to
1864
-
1964
please everybody, and although this is not possible it does seem,
from the number of requests I have received, that a large number
of people found the season interesting and rewarding.
I have
modelled this season on the same lines; a backbone of repertoire
concerts, established masterpieces and classics, two concerts of
popular classics, favourites from the London Promenade season
and even lighter smaller pieces such as the B.B.C. uses in its’ Friday
and Saturday series, and three enterprising concerts of modern and
unfamiliar music.
My plea to Guildford’s public to support these enterprising
concerts last season, so important for Guildford’s musical prestige
in the country, was responded to in such a way that they had a
higher average audience than either the repertoire or the light series
and I hope this fact will encourage many more people to come and
enjoy some of the exciting and not unapproachable music of this
century.
As I said last year, a concert season of fifteen or so con-
certs forces one into certain omissions which one has to try to
counteract in the next season.
So this year my neglect of Mozart’s
great output is to some extent rectified, and although no Mozart
Symphony is to be performed three of his concerti and the great
Mass in C minor will be heard.
I shall always do my best to include requests, if possible, and
I have been surprised but pleased to receive a number of letters
asking for the Cesar Franck Symphony and the John Ireland Piano
Concerto.
Both of these splendid works are included in repertoire
concerts.
The Choral works offered this season cover a very wide
range from Mozart and Haydn to Stravinsky and Constant Lambert
and two of the three enterprising concerts, November 14th and
May Ist, include Choral music.
Most people now know of the tremendous work done by the
Concertgoers’ Society for Corporation music and the Concertgoers
Members’ Evenings are closely bound up with the series of concerts.
For instance, each year young artists are given an evening to them-
selves to perform to the Society and a ballot is taken, the winner
of which is given a concert the following season with the Municipal
Surcep Advertiser
Orchestra. This year that winner was Glenys Birch, and she is the
soloist in the light concert on March 7th, 1965.
The first of the
Crossley Clitheroe Concerts will take place on October 25th, when
the Concertgoers’ Society donates the fee of the soloist, and appropriately that programme will contain a work by Brahms, one of
Mr. Clitheroe’s favourite composers.
Programme for the 1964-65 Concerts
Guildford Civic Hall
In a season which tries to be balanced, it is hard to single out
particular programmes, but the fact that the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, under their internationally known guest conductor Tibor
Paul, have consented to be guest Orchestra in our series of concerts
is, surely, an indication that the famous musical organisations of
Britain are at last taking notice of us, and I hope that we will give
SUNDAY, 27th SEPTEMBER, at 3 p.m.
our distinguished colleagues a warm welcome on February 28th.
Overture “Tannhauser’
Another outstanding event will be the enterprising concert on
Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor
November 14th. A programme of works which any orchestra in the
Enigma Variations
world would find a challenge will be presented and, as is my policy,
one of the modern works will be a truly unfamiliar one, rather than
merely fashionably modern.
At a time when certain modern

composers are ‘in’ some fine twentieth-century works are being
neglected. If the audience that came to Vaughan Williams’ London
Symphony last year will come to Bax’s Fourth Symphony, I promise
that they will go away singing. My colleagues and I are determined
to make this season of Corporation Concerts a memorable one for
