Welcome to our 1995 Family Carol Concert.
The Festive Season is with us once again and it is my sincere wish that our concert today will
rekindle the true meaning of Christmas within each of us.

“Goodwill to all men”, easy to say, but often not so easy to fulfil towards our families and friends.
Rotary International President Herb Brown believes that Peace in the family is the key to all that
is good in the world. Issues as diverse as childcare, juvenile delinquency, fresh water, business
ethics, poverty and hunger, are felt first in the home and by family members. As we address these

concerns, Rotary clubs worldwide are charged with honouring “Rotary’s Commitment to Family
and Community” during the week 12 ~ 18 February 1996.

It is sometimes difficult to believe that some of these problems exist in so called affluent Surrey.

We know there are people in our town who need a caring hand and the Rotary Club of Guildford
has as its current theme “Caring for Guildford”

Todays concert, in conjunction with the Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Distress Fund, will
contribute towards a party for the elderly disadvantaged of Guildford many of whom have seldom
left their homes from one year to the next.

Last year, at this concert, I was “very close” to Father Christmas. For me, the innocence of the
young children as they eagerly anticipated receiving their small gift, was an unforgettable and
magical moment. I hope every one of us can find it in our hearts to give and receive, each to our
abilities and needs, in the true Christian spirit which Christmas embodies.

My thanks to the many people of our Town who have willingly given their time and effort to make
this concert happen, but particularly to you our audience in supporting this happy and successful
occasion.

A Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year to you all.

1995 FAMILY CAROLS

AUDIENCE CAROLS

Once in royal David’s city
Solo

Once in royal David’s city

Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:

Choir
only

Not in that poor lowly stable,

With the oxen standing by,

We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;

Mary was that mother mild,

When like stars his children crowned

Jesus Christ her little child.

All in white shall wait around.

He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

All

And through all this wondrous childhood
He would honour and obey,

Love, and watch the holy maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;

Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.

While shepherds watched their flocks by night

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,

“The heav’nly Babe you there shall find

To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,

And glory shone around.

And in a manger laid.”

“Fear not”, said he (for mighty dread

Thus spake the Seraph; and forthwith

Had seized their troubled mind);

“Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind.

“To you in David’s town this day

Appeared a shining throng

Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:
“All glory be to God on high,

Is born of David’s line

And to the earth be peace;

A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;

Goodwill henceforth from heav’n to men

And this shall be the sign:

1995 FAMILY CAROLS

Begin and never cease”.

O come, all ye faithful
O come, all ye faithful,

Sing, choirs of angels,

Joyful and triumphant.

Sing in exultation,

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;

Come and behold him,

Glory to God

Born the King of Angels:

In the highest:

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

Christ the Lord.

God of God,

Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,

Light of Light,

Born this happy morning,

Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb.

Jesu, to thee be glory given;

Very God,

Word of the Father,

Begotten, not created:

Now in flesh appearing;

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

Christ the Lord.

Christ the Lord.

See amid the winter’s snow
See amid the winter’s snow,
Born for us on earth below;

See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years:

Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!

Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Lo, within a manger lies

Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was thine,

Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this!

Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Teach, 0 teach us, Holy Child,

He who built the starry skies;

By thy face so meek and mild,

He who, throned in height sublime,

Teach us to resemble thee,

Sits amid the cherubim:

In thy sweet humility:

Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!

Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!

Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!

Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!

Sing through all Jerusalem,

Sing through all Jerusalem,

Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Christ is born in Bethlehem.

1995 FAMILY CAROLS

O little town of Bethlehem
O little town of Bethlehem,

How silently, how silently,

How still we see thee lie!

The wondrous gift is given!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

So God imparts to human hearts

The silent stars go by.

The blessings of his heaven.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

No ear may hear his coming;

The everlasting light;

But in this world of sin,

The hopes and fears of all the years

Where meek souls will receive him, still

Are met in thee tonight.

The dear Christ enters in.

O morning stars, together

O holy Child of Bethlehem,

Proclaim the holy birth,

Descend to us, we pray;

And praises sing to God the King,

Cast out our sin, and enter in,

And peace to men on earth;

Be born in us today.

For Christ is born of Mary;

We hear the Christmas angels

And, gathered all above,

The great glad tidings tell:

While mortal sleep, the angels keep

O come to us, abide with us,

Their watch of wondering love.

Our Lord Emmanuel.

Away in a manger (Children)
Away in a manger,

Hark! the herald-angels sing
Hark! the herald-angels sing

no crib for a bed,

Glory to the new-born King;

The little Lord Jesus

Peace on earth and mercy mild,

laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the bright sky
looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus

asleep on the hay.

God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing

Glory to the new-born King.
The cattle are lowing,

the baby awakes,

Christ, by highest heaven adored,

But little Lord Jesus

Christ, the everlasting Lord,

no crying he makes.

Late in time behold him come

I love thee, Lord Jesus!
Look down from the sky,

And stay by my side
until morning is nigh.

Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,

Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing

Be near me, Lord Jesus;

Glory to the new-born King.

I ask thee to stay

Close by me for ever,

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

and love me I pray.

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Bless all the dear children

Light and life to all he brings,

in thy tender care,

And fit us for heaven,
to live with thee there.

Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,

Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth,
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

JEREMY BACKHOUSE began his musical career in Canterbury Cathedral where he was Head
Chorister, and later studied music at Liverpool University.

He spent five years as Music Editor at the

Royal National Institute for the Blind, where he was responsible for the transcription of print music into
Braille. In 1986 he joined EMI Records as a Literary Editor and since April 1990 he has combined his
work as a Consultant Editor for EMI Classics with his career as a freelance musician.
Between 1991 and 1995, he was Music Director of both the Streatham Choral Society and the BBC Club

Choir, working closely with the Kensington Symphony Orchestra, the Amoeba Orchestra and the Surrey
Sinfonietta. Jeremy is also the conductor of the Vasari Singers, widely acknowledged as one of the finest
chamber choirs in the country. Since winning the prestigious Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year competition
in 1988, they have performed regularly on the South Bank and at St. John’s, Smith Square in London,, as
well as in the cathedrals of Canterbury, Chichester, Winchester, Hereford, Ely and Peterborough. Next
year they will give their first recital at the Wigmore Hall. Each year on Christmas Eve, the choir sings

Midnight Mass at Westminster Abbey. Jeremy and the choir have broadcast frequently on BBC Radios 3
and 4, and have made a number of recordings on both the EMI Eminence and United labels. His recording
with the Vasari Singers of the Howells’Requiem and Frank Martin Mass was nominated for a Gramophone
Award in 1995 and was selected (along with their Britten CD) for inclusion in the 1996 Gramophone

Good CD Guide.
In January 1995, Jeremy was appointed Chorus Master of the Guildford Philharmonic Choir, and in April

worked for the first time with the BBC Singers in a programme of works by Lennox Berkeley for broadcast
on BBC Radio 3. Further work with the BBC Singers includes recordings of partsongs by Holst to be
broadcast on 20th December, as part of the BBC’s ‘Fairest Isle’ celebrations, and on Christmas Day.

JEREMY FILSELL, educated at Coventry, was an Organ Scholar at Keble College Oxford and
studied Piano with the late David Parkhouse and Hilary McNamara as a post-graduate at the Royal College
of Music.

Aged 19 whilst studying under Nicholas Kynaston, he was awarded the Linpus, Shinn and

Durrant Prizes for FRCO and gained the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in the
same year.

As a freelance pianist, he has worked extensively with individual singers and instrumentalists and with
such groups as the BBC Singers, Corydon Singers, Pimlico Opera and the European Contemporary Music
Ensemble. As a soloist, he has appeared in festivals in London, Cambridge, Salisbury and Lichfield and
in concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Ireland. His CD of Herbert Howells and Bernard
Stevens solo piano music prompted Classic CD to speak of his being “... extremely accomplished

6

1995 FAMILY CAROLS

technically. He nonetheless does not attract for his virtuosity but for his ability to make the music unfold
with irresistible logic and clarity: music-making of the highest calibre.”
As a concert Organist, he has played extensively in this country, Germany and the USA and won Second

Prize in the 1993 St. Albans International Organ Competition.

He has recorded solo discs for Gamut,

Herald and Guild, and has appeared as accompanist on a number of others. A recording of Vierne and
Widor prompted Gramophone to speak of “... the sheer brilliance of his playing, his uncanny musical

insight and the sheer persuasive power of his performances”.

He is represented by Chameleon Arts

Management.

ANDREW MILLINGTON was born in 1952 and studied the organ at Worcester Cathedral under
Harry Bramma and Christopher Robinson. Whilst still at school he became accompanist to the City of

Birmingham Choir, and in 1971 took up an Organ Scholarship at Downing College, Cambridge. He gained the
FRCO diploma at the age of nineteen and graduated with an honours degeree in music in 1974. The following
year he became Assistant Organist at Gloucester Cathedral, and developed a varied career as an organist,
conductor and teacher. He played a prominent part in the Three Choirs Festivals of 1977 and 1980 and held the

conductorships of no less than four notable choirs in the Midlands area; Birmingham Bach Society,
Kidderminster Choral Society, Saint Cecilia Singers and Aldwyn Consort of Voices. Two of these choirs won
major awards in the international radio competition ‘Let the Peoples Sing’.
In 1983 he succeeded Philip Moore (now at York Minster) as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Guildford

Cathedral. Since this appointment, he has undertaken a busy schedule of concerts, recordings and tours with
the choir, in addition to the daily worship in the Cathedral. He is also conductor of the Bracknell Choral
Society, and an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He has travelled extensively
as an organist and choral director, and in 1990 he directed an RSCM Summer School in South Africa.
He is a regular recitalist on BBC Radio 3, and has played as a soloist at prestigious venues in Britain, including

the Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. He has worked closely with several
major orchestras and made many recordings as a conductor and organist.
He is married with three children.

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir was formed by Guildford Borough in order to perform the major choral
repertoire with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as performing well-known choral works, the
choir specializes in twentieth century British music and this has led to recordings of Gerald Finzi’s ‘Intimations

of Immortality’ with the Guildford Philharmonic and Patrick Hadley’s ‘The Trees So High’ with the
Philharmonia Orchestra, both recordings being conducted by Vernon Handley.
The Choir is conducted by some of the most eminent musicians, and as well as giving frequent concerts in

Guildford, the Choir occasionally visits other British cities. In 1988 it visited Paris; in 1990 joined forces with
the Freiburger Bachchor in Freiburg Munster and in November 1993 gave an outstanding performance of

Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ also with the Freiburger Bachchor under Neville Creed. In March 1996 the
Philharmonic and the Freiburger Bachchor will join forces again for a performance of Dvorak’s ‘Stabat Mater’
under Hans Michael Beuerle - the Freiburger Bachchor’s Director - in Guildford Cathedral.
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir is trained by Jeremy Backhouse who was appointed Chorus Director at the
beginning of this year. He is assisted by Peter White. Jeremy Filsell is the accompanist.
Further details about the choir may be obtained from:

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC BRASS ENSEMBLE
The Guildford Philharmonic Brass Ensemble comprises regular members of the Guildford Philharmonic
Orchestra which celebrated its 50th Anniversary last season. The Orchestra was founded in 1945 by Guildford
Borough Council under the Directorship of Crossley Clitheroe. Following his death, Vernon Handley directed
the Orchestra for twenty one years. He was succeeded by Sir Charles Groves and Sir Alexander Gibson. In
September of this year En Shao was appointed Principal Conductor.

GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL CHOIR
The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first Organist and

Choirmaster. Since the Consecration of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained a daily Sung Evensong, and
has built up an enviable reputation for its singing. The boys of the choir (20), are drawn from Lanesborough
Preparatory School in Guildford and some of the older ones attend the Royal Grammar School. The lower
parts are sung by professional layclerks and choral scholars from the University of Surrey.
During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings, including an album of Christmas

Carols which won a ‘Gold Disc’ award for the sale of over five hundred thousand records, and just recently a
‘Platinum Disc’ for over a million records sold. The choir has toured widely in Britain and Europe and in 1988
undertook an extensive tour of Canada, singing to capacity audiences from Ottawa in the East, to Victoria BC
in the West. The choir broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3, and has made several TV appearances.

In 1974 Barry Rose moved to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and he was succeeded by Philip Moore. He was appointed
to York Minster in 1983 and the post is now occupied by the present Organist and Master of the Choristers,
Andrew Millington.

The choir covers a large repertoire from plainsong to contemporary music, including a wide variety of European styles. In addition to service music, the choir occasionally performs larger works with orchestra. In
recent years, these have included Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ and Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’.
