FAMILY CAROL CONCERT
Christmas is a time when our hearts are moved to remember those who are less fortunate and a time of
tradition both in our homes and in the community.
The Family Carol Concert in Guildford has been part of the town’s Christmas tradition for over 40
years and those of us who gather together to enjoy the music and take part in the singing will be
helping the Rotary Club of Guildford to provide support for others in the Borough.
The Club will again be allocating the proceeds from this afternoon to the Mayor of Guildford’s Charities
which, in turn, helps to support a party for senior citizens, a popular annual event organised by Rotary
on behalf of the Mayor.
The motto of Rotary is “Service above Self’, emphasising the privilege we feel in helping others
through our various vocations, although we are well aware that much of our work could not be undertaken
without your generosity.
Therefore, this is our opportunity to thank you for enabling us to serve the local, national and international
community, and during the last year we have been proud to assist needy persons, local service
organisations and to join other Rotarians, both in this country and abroad, in supporting a wide range
of projects throughout the world.
This year’s Rotary International motto is “Believe in What You Do. Do What You Believe in”, so
thank you again for your support this afternoon which will help us to ensure that we can bring some
joy and happiness into the lives of others.
I wish you a peaceful and joyful Christmas and prosperous New Year.

1993 FAMILY CAROLS
AUDIENCE CAROLS
Once in royal David’s city
Solo
Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
Choir He came down to earth from heaven
only
All
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall,
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
And our eyes at last shall see Him,
Through his own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone.
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
“All in white shall wait around.
And through all this wondrous childhood
He would honour and obey,
Love, and watch the holy maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.
While shepherds watched their flocks
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
‘The heavenly Babe you there shall find
All seated on the ground,
The Angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around.
To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid.’
‘Fear not,” said he (for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind);
‘Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind,’
Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of Angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:
“To you in David’s town this day
Is born of David’s line
A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;
And this shall be his sign:’
‘All glory be to God on high,
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men
Begin and never cease.’
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
1993 FAMILY CAROLS
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Bomn to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth,
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Unto us is born a Son
Unto us is born a Son,
Women
King of quires sepernal:
And O that Mary’s gentle Child
Might lead us up to glory!
See on earth his life begun,
Of lords the Lord eternal.
Christ, from heav’n descending low,
Men
Of his love and mercy mild
This the Christmas story;
All
Oand A, and A and O,
Comes on earth a stranger;
Cum cantibus in choro,
Ox and ass their owner know,
Becradled in the manger.
Benedicamus Domino.
Let our merry organ go,
This did Herod sore affray,
And grievously bewilder,
So he gave the word to slay,
And slew the little childer.
God rest you merry, gentlemen
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born upon this day,
To save us all from Satan’s power,
When we were gone astray:
O tidings of comfort and joy.
From God our heavenly Father
A blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The son of God by name:
O tidings of comfort and joy.
But when to Bethlehem they came,
Wherat this infant lay,
They found him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling,
Unto the Lord did pray:
O tidings of comfort and joy.
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface:
O tidings of comfort and joy.
The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoicéd much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethlehem straightway
This blesséd babe to find:
O tidings of comfort and joy.
Away in a manger (Children)
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he
lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me for ever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra’s regular playing strength of 75 professional musicians perform an annual season
of concerts at the Civic Hall attracting national attention.
The Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1945 by Guildford Borough Council; its first Musical Director
was Crossley Clitheroe. On his death in 1962 he was succeeded by Vernon Handley, who served the Orchestra for 21
years. Sir Charles Groves held the position from 1986 until his death in June 1992.
A varied repertoire each season reflects the Orchestra’s desire to appeal to all music lovers there really is something
for everyone. Celebrated musicians highlight each season, and children’s concerts and educational projects are
frequently held. An ‘Adopt a Player’ scheme introduces young audiences to the players, and workshops promoted in
association with the County Music Inspectorate help to cultivate composition skills amongst GCSE music students.
Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra continues to be funded and promoted by Guildford Borough Council with assistance from the South East Arts Association, the South East Music Trust, the Musician’s Union and the goodwill of the
Guildford Philharmonic Society. The Orchestra acknowledges the generous support of its Sponsors.
GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir was formed by Guildford Borough in order to perform the major choral repertoire
with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as performing well-known choral works, the choir specializes in
twentieth century British music and this has led to recordings of Gerald Finzi’s ‘Intimations of Immortality’ with the
Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra and Patrick Hadley’s ‘The Trees So High’ with the Philharmonia Orchestra, both
recordings being conducted by Vernon Handley.
The choir is conducted by some of the most eminent musicians, and as well as giving frequent concerts in Guildford,
the choir occasionally visits other British cities. In 1988 the Guildford Philharmonic Choir visited Paris and in 1990
joined forces with the Freiburger Bach Choir in Freiburg Munster.
The Choir is trained by Neville Creed, who was appointed Chorus Master in 1987 and he is assisted by Peter White.
Jeremy Filsell is the Choir’s accompanist.
The Choir has just returned from a highly successful visit to Freiburg where it gave an outstanding performance of
Britten’s ‘War Requiem’. Future plans include performances of Vaughan Williams’ ‘Sancta Civitas’ under Vernon
Handley and Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ with Sir David Willcocks.
Further details about the choir may be obtained from:
Kathleen Atkins, Guildford Philharmonic, Millmead House, Millmead, Guildford, Surrey GU2 5BB.

GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL CHOIR
The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first Organist and Choirmaster. Since the Consecration of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained a daily Sung Evensong, and has built up an
enviable reputation for its singing. The boys of the choir (20), are drawn from Lanesborough Preparatory School in
Guildford and some of the older ones attend the Royal Grammar School. The lower parts are sung by professional
layclerks and choral scholars from the University of Surrey.
During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings, including an album of Christmas Carols
which won a ‘Gold Disc’ award for the sale of over five hundred thousand records, and just recently a ‘Platinum Disc’
for over a million records sold. The choir has toured widely in Britain and Europe and in 1988 undertook an extensive
tour of Canada, singing to capacity audiences from Ottawa in the East, to Victoria BC in the West. The choir broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3, and has made several TV appearances.
In 1974 Barry Rose moved to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and he was succeeded by Philip Moore. He was appointed to York
Minster in 1983 and the post is now occupied by the present Organist and Master of the Choristers, Andrew
Millington.
The choir covers a large repertoire from plainsong to contemporary music, including a wide variety of European
styles. In addition to service music, the choir occasionally performs larger works with orchestra. In recent years, these
have included Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ and Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’.

MICHAEL BUERK - PRESENTER
Michael Buerk is the main presenter of BBC Television’s flagship news programme, “The Nine O’Clock News”. He
also presents, and reports for, Britain’s leading television programme about environmental issues BBC TV’s “Nature”,
and peak time BBC1 programme about emergencies “999”. He is chairman of the BBC’s discussion programme on
moral and ethical issues “The Moral Maze” (BBC Radio 4). In addition to these regular commitments he chairs,
presents, reports for, and contributes to, a number of other television and radio programmes, mostly for the BBC.
Apart from broadcasting, he lectures on international issues and environmental matters, and chairs conferences on
current affairs, political and industrial questions.
He has reported for BBC TV News since 1973. He was a network reporter from 1973-1976, industrial correspondent
(1976/7), Energy Correspondent (1977/9), Scotland Correspondent (1979/80), Special Correspondent (1980/82),
Southern Africa Correspondent (1983/87).
Before joining BBC Television he did his journalistic training on newspapers, completing the Thompson Organisation’s graduate training scheme at the Western Mail in Cardiff. He subsequently worked on the Daily Mail, BBC
Radio, and HTV (West) before rejoining the BBC in the television news department.
Michael Buerk has probably won more international awards for television reporting than any other British journalist,
most notably for his coverage of the Ethiopian famine in 1984/5. His reports, filmed with the Nairobi based cameraman, Mohamed Amin, alerted the world to the extent of the tradegy. They were shown worldwide to an audience of
billions. They led directly to a massive international relief effort, itself valued in billions of dollars, which was estimated to have saved well over a million lives.
He was named “Television Journalist of the Year” by the Royal Television Society in 1984, and won a second Royal
Television Society award that year for foreign reporting. He has won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts
(BAFTA) award for factual broadcasting. He has been awarded the “Golden Nymph” at the Monte Carlo Film and
Television Festival, Europe’s premier prize for television journalism, and the United States’ “National Headliner” and
“George Polk” awards, two of the three most important honours there for broadcasters. He has also received awards
from the United Nations and the Roman Catholic Church. In 1988 he was the third recipient of the James Cameron
Memorial award given for “work as a journalist that combined moral vision and professional integrity” in his coverage of the township uprising and state of emergency in South Africa.
~ Most recently, he was named “Science Writer of the Year” in 1989 for a documentary on the environmental destruction of Poland, “The Poisoned Inheritance”. In 1992 he won the award for the “Best individual contribution to British
Television” (Voice of the Listener and Viewer Assn.) as well as being named “Radio Broadcaster of the Year” by the
Broadcasting Press Guild.
He has reported for the BBC from more than fifty countries, covered wars in the Middle East (1973), Cyprus (1974),
El Salvador (1982), Tigre (1984), Uganda (1984), Angola (1985), Mozambique (1983/5/6), Sri Lanka (1987), Eritrea/
Tigre (1989), Ethiopia (1991), Somalia (1991 & 2). He spent long periods in the mid - 70’s reporting on the troubles
in Northern Ireland, he reported from the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, during the Falklands conflict, and, of
course on the township uprisings in South Africa from 1983-7. He has covered political, diplomatic and economic
developments from the North Slope of Alaska to Cape Town, from Calcutta to Katowice.
Michael is 47, married with twin teenaged boys and lives in Guildford.
NEVILLE CREED - CONDUCTOR
Neville Creed began his conducting career whilst a choral scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. He then became
Director of Choral Music at Tiffin School in Kingston-upon-Thames, providing choirs for several highly acclaimed
recordings for radio, television and disc. The Tiffin Boys’ Choir recording of Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the
London Philharmonic Orchestra under Klaus Tennstedt gained a nomination for a ‘Grammy’ Award. During this time
he became conductor of the Milton Keynes Chorale and Assistant Chorus Master of the London Philharmonic Choir.
In 1986 he was awarded a scholarship to study conducting at The Guildhall School of Music where he won the
Ricordi Conducting Prize. Whilst at the Guildhall he conducted the second British staging of the opera ‘Julietta’ by
Martinu. Since completing his studies, he has founded the London Musici Singers, been appointed Chorus Master of
the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the Guildford Philharmonic Choir, returned to the Guildhall to conduct and
worked as Associate Chorus Master with the Philharmonia Chorus. In 1988 he won the second prize in the First
International Choral Conducting Competition held in Italy and in 1991 won a semi-final prize in the Leeds competition for Orchestral Conducting.
;
He has conducted the European Community Chamber Orchestra in France and regularly conducts in Denmark. He has
given concerts with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Guildford Philharmonic
Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic ‘Pops’ Orchestra and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
