Dear Sir
It was a pleasure to be among the large and enthusiastic audience at the performance
of Bruckner’s Mass No 2 and Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony in Guildford
Cathedral last week. There are few opportunities to hear these major works locally,
and the Guildford Philharmonic Choir, reinforced on this occasion by the Wooburn
Singers, with the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, did not let us down.
The emotional commitment and communication of all the performers, directed by the
Choir’s chorus master Jeremy Backhouse, more than made up for the occasional
inaccuracy. The orchestra brought stirring force to the Mahler symphony, which
makes huge demands upon both players and singers.
This was a major occasion in Guildford’s musical year. Why was Guildford’s own
orchestra not involved, and why did the concert not merit a notice in your own
columns?
Yours faithfully
C L Martin
