Return of Vivace Chorus
AS the People’s Cathedral
Project continues and
works carry on inside the

building, Guildford
Cathedral is beginning to
welcome back concerts
and events to add to the
services which have been
taking place throughout.

Vivace Chorus returns
to the Cathedral for the
first time since works
started for a quite
extraordinary concert on

Saturday March 4 at 7.30
as part of the Guildford
International Music
Festival.
Titled Mozart in the
Cathedral, the concert
programme includes a

performance of the
composer’s very popular
Mass in C minor.
Alongside this work, the
choir will also perform the
unaccompanied Howells
Requiem, a piece that
was very personal to the
composer, and only
published in 1980, despite
having been composed in
the 1930s. The acclaimed
Brandenburg Sinfonia will
also play Samuel Barber’s
Adagio for Strings, a
piece which is familiar to
audiences of all ages, and
has been associated with
a number of key historical
events, including the TV
announcement of the
assassination of President

Vivace Chorus returns to Guildford Cathedral for the first
time since work started to perform a concert on March
4
John F Kennedy and at
the Last Night of the
Proms in 2001 to
commemorate the victims
of the 9/11 attacks.
The restoration work is
in way dictating the
atmosphere. A reduced
seating capacity means
only 350 tickets are being
sold; due to a temporary
heating system, it will be
considerably colder than
usual and despite the
best efforts of the staff,
the Cathedral may not be

as clean one would
expect it to be. It will all
make for an intimate and
reflective performance as
the building fills with
music.
Tickets for this concert
are available from the

Guildford Tourist
Information Office on
01483 444333 or at www.
guildford.gov.uk/
visitguildford and are
priced at £16, £21 and
£26, with discounts for
concessions.
