Chantez!
A night
of French
song at
G Live
THERE’S beautiful music
in the offing at G Live on
Saturday (May 21) as
Guildford’s Vivace Chorus
performs Chantez! A
Night of French Song.
Two pieces by Gabriel
Fauré - his Requiem and
the Cantique de Jean
Racine — were voted into
the top 100 in this year’s
Classic FM Hall of Fame,
with the Requiem at 30.
Universally loved as
moving and uplifting, it
has been used in many
films and TV shows,
including Hannibal, Mr
Selfridge, South Park and
Inspector Morse.
Following on from a
sell-out Night at the
Operain March, the
Vivace Chorus is keeping
it in the family, with
soloists Jocelyn
Somerville and Matthew
Woods, who both sing
with the Vasari Singers,
an award-winning and
much-recorded London
chamber choir conducted
by Vivace’s Jeremy
Backhouse. The choir is
also joined by the
Brandenburg Sinfonia.
The choir will be singing
the very popular Panis
Angelicus by César
Franck. Most recently
used in the film Philomena
with Dame Judi Dench
and Steve Coogan, it was
also used in the second
St Trinian’s movie, and in
the TV series Joan of Arc.
It is one of the most
recognisable pieces of
choral music.
To celebrate the spnng
season, the programme
also includes Massenet’s
Chansons des bois
d’amaranthe.
