GPO’s poignant
concert choice
" GUILDFORD Philharmonic Orchestra has
selected works of particular poignancy by British
composers for its ‘Remembrance Day concert on
Saturday next week.
Elgar’s For the Fallen is
the setting of the Laurence
Binyon poem containing
the immortal words “They
shali not grow old as we
that are left grow old...”
It is the last of the tril-
ogy of his poems set to
music by Elgar in 1915.
The concert programme
continues with a much
more widely known work
by Elgar — his popular
Enigma Variations.
The final work is Gerald Finzi’s setting of
Wordsworth’s poem Inti-
mations of Immortalty,
and Mrs. Joy Finzi will be
in the Civic Hall County
Room at 6.30 p.m. to dis-
cuss the composition with
orchestra principal con- ductor Sir Charles Groves.
The concert starts at 7.30
p.m.
