CROWDS of Guildford shoppers turned out to watch the grand
switching-on of the Christmas lights last Thursday. The Mayor of
Guildford, Mrs. Elizabeth Cobbett, arrived at the Guildhall in
Cinderella's coach pulled by two Shetland ponies and accompanied
by pantomime. stars. The Guildford Philharmonic Choir and the
Salvation Army Band added to the festive atmosphere, singing and

blaze of multi-coloured lights with glowing snowmen, Father
Christmas figures, stars and bells. Fireworks — a noisy but
exuberant surprise addition to the celebration — were set off just
afterwards from the Castle Grounds.
