SIR Charles Groves
will conduct the
Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra in a
programme of works
by Dvorak, Sibelius
and Glinka on Sunday, to launch the orchestra’s new season
of concerts.
The afternoon concert in
the Civic Hall, Guildford,
will feature the popular
young

cellist,

Felix

Schmidt, who last visited

the town in 1985 to the
play the Saint Saens Concerto with Vernon Handley.
The programme will in-

clude Glinka’s overture,
Russlan and Ludmilla,
Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in
B minor and Sibelius’ Smy"

phony No. 2 in D.

One of the highlights in

. the

pre-Chnstmas

season

will be

Lumley,

actress,

narrating

Joanna

Proko-

fiev’s Peter and the Wolf,
with her husband Stephen
Barlow conducting.
The concert will also include works by Tchaikovsky and Dvorak and will be
held at 3 p.m. in the Civic
Hall, on Sunday, October
25.
The Orpheus and Bacchus concert, the second in
the series, will be held on
Saturday, October 10, at
7.30 p.m. in Guildford
Cathedral.
Guest conductor, Volker
Wangenheim will conduct
Haydn’s Symphony No.
104 and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4.
On Saturday, November
14, the contralto Alfreda
Hodgson will sing in a performance of Elgar’s The
Music Makers, conducted
by Sir Charles Groves.
On Saturday,” November

29, the Pohsh violin vir‘tuoso, Barbara Gorzynska
plays Tchaikovsky’s Violin
Concerto with John Forster
conducting.

The programme ‘will also

include

works

by Holst,

Delius and Kodaly.
The Ravel/Gershwin Anniversary Concert on Saturday, December 12, is likely
to prove very popular.
The evening will include
Ravel’'s Mother Goose
suite, La Valse and Pavane
Pour Une Infante Defunte
‘and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F and An Amenican in Paris.
The programme will be
‘conducted y Brian Wright
-and the soloist will be
Philip Martin, the popular
Irish pianist featured in this
year’s BBC Proms.
