SOME of the greatest names in the long
history of Venetian music are brought
together by Vivace Chorus, at Guildford
Cathedral, on Saturday, March 7.
The programme will feature Venetian
baroque music feature Vivaldi’s Gloria
and
work by Monteverdi, Schutz,
Gabrielli and Lotti.
|
The choir is set to take the audience
on a journey both in time and space full
of stimulating experiences.
|
After
the
choral
fanfare
from
Monteverdi’s Vespers, the concert will
launch into his Beatus vir, full of optimism, energy and excitement. The jour-

ney continues with a sparkling setting of
the Jubilate by Giovanni Gabrielli, a contemporary of Monteverdi.

Also featured will be a work from
Antonio Lotti, a near-contemporary of

both these great men and who, like
them, composed for St Mark's in Venice —
this is one of his many poignant settings
of the Crucifixus, full of agonising dissonances. There is also a chance to hear
the glorious music of the German com-

poser, Heinrich Schutz, with one of his
most magnificent choral works, a setting
of the celebratory Psalm 150.
Each half of the concert ends with a
masterpiece from Antonio Vivaldi — the

Magnificat, and the Gloria to end what
promises to be a vibrant evening of
music-making.
The concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets

are available from Guildford Tourist
Information on 01483 444334 and
Michael Taylor on 07958 519741. Preconcert suppers can be booked with the
Cathedral Refectory on 01483 560471.
Interval drinks will be available.
