conducting this most grandiloquent and
moving of Requiems, which is not only
Brahms’s greatest vocal work, but also
the central work of his career. The
seven sections centre round faith in the
Resurrection rather than fear of the Day
of Judgment and contain glorious choral
writing, lovely solos and the most subtle

and exciting orchestration.

Tickets: £15 (balcony), £12 (stalls),

This special concert for Passiontide falls on the exact
centenary of the death of John Stainer, composer and
organist of St Paul’s Cathedral. Stainer’s work of 1887 has
been a favourite with choirs and churches from the the moment
it was written. It has never before, however, been orchestrated

and the Guildford Philharmonic has commissioned Barry Rose
to do this, which will be sure to give the work a new and

refreshed lease of life.
The Requiem of the French organist and composer Maurice

Duruflé is his finest work, drawing exquisitely on Gregorian
melodies which the composer surrounds with luscious harmonies.
This concert is part of the celebrations surrounding the

40th anniversary of the consecration of Guildford Cathedral,
of which Barry Rose was the first Organist and Master of

the Choristers.
