Founded in 1945 by Guildford Borough Council,
the Guildford Philharmonic is the professional
‘Orchestra of the South East’ and the regular
series in Guildford Civic Hall and Guildford
Cathedral have attracted national attention.
Sir Charles Groves has been the Principal
Conductor since 1987 succeeding Vernon
Handley, who now holds the position of
‘Conductor Emeritus’ The playing strength
of 75 professional musicians is jointly led by
Hugh Bean and John Ludlow.
