FOREWORD
It is taken for granted that the Guildford Borough Council will maintain its
services to the public, including its musical one, even though it is hit as hard
as
any other Council by directives from Central Government. To do
this it must
depend on the loyalty and ingenuity of its officers and friends. In the
Philharmonic Society it has a great friend. Over the years the Society
has
offered help to the Borough Concerts Scheme in diverse ways, often in the form
of direct grants for extra rehearsals, extra players for exotic works, and for
several of the orchestra's recordings. Recently its assumption of some of the
responsibility for publicity and season tickets has met a need for which
the
Borough found it difficult to plan. But the Society would be ready to admit
that the accolade for loyalty and ingenuity would go to our Concerts Manager,
Kathleen Atkins. Her responsibilities are without number and all are discharged
with tact, firmness, warmth and endless resource. The virtues of people behind
the scenes may receive formal recognition in programmes and memoranda, but
otherwise go largely unsung. It would be true to say that after some of the
concerts in the Enterprising Series, orchestra, choirs, soloists and conductor
would be happy to join the audience in order to salute one person left on the
platform — our incredible Concerts Manager; for we know that without her
work
there would be no concert at all.
It is taken for granted that in times of national economic derangement, some of
the most worthwhile things in our society will suffer ‘cuts’ in favour of so-called
essentials. The people who decide what is essential always act in this way,
deriving their criteria from a narrowly selective sample of human behaviour
patterns. In more balmy days (spell it as you will) there seems to be money for
‘what the public wants’, by which is usually meant the more superficial and
spectacular entertainment that draws a quick but not necessarily lasting
A study of the preceding paragraphs will show that in the Country’s present
dilemma, concert audiences will not fall off, the expectation of orchestral standards will be high, the Borough and the Philharmonic Society will continue
their
support, and the demands of my varied repertoire will tax further the
ingenuity
of Kathleen Atkins if we are to present a season which moves forwards ona
budget which moves backwards.
audience. Yet during the 1939-1945 war, the time of Suez, and the recent oil
A constant renewal of one’s faith in proven standards is difficult in a world
where change for change’s sake is often advocated and excuses one for the
time of stress. Surely the size of the wartime audience for serious music was in
abandonment of consistency. Yet through changing times the Guildford
audiences remain constant. People move from the district, others arrive and join
crisis, concert audience figures soared, showing clearly ‘what the public wants’ in
the minds of those wise people who set up the Guildford Concert Scheme in 1945.
It is taken for granted that a professional orchestra will play brilliantly no matter
what its conditions, rates of pay, programme, rehearsal schedule, or the state of
the country. Lower subsidies, public and private, mean fewer jobs for all
musicians, players, soloists, and conductors, but standards of performance will
not be expected to fall, and for a public in need, music will work its customary
magic to even greater effect. In the 1975-1976 season in Guildford, popular,
neglected, and new works will forma fascinating and stimulating procession
from September to May; an aural spectacle aimed at restoring or sustaining that
which nowadays seems to me the most spectacular condition of all — sanity.
Variety in the repertoire will be paralleled by a variety in the age, type and
nationality of the performers. Our famous guest conductor Walter Susskind
will.open the season, and two concerts later John Forster, who stood in at short
the enthusiastic atmosphere of the concerts. You seem to accept that renewal
could be the watchword of our series, with its insistence on both the standard
repertoire and a high proportion of modern or new works. Since between
us we
have found the answer to the problem of the box-office without compromising
our ideals, we could formulate an authoritative directive to those in authority.
It would go like this: ‘‘In hard times provide greater subsidies for the arts
throughout the country; earmark an especially large proportion of funds for the
use of the Guildford Borough and its Music Department. Let Kathleen Atkins deal
with the enlarged budget, and the Musical Director and his team produce the even
more adventurous programmes, and most important of all, let the Guildford
audiences enjoy the fruits of such foresight."’
We shall never take you for granted.
notice when | was ill earlier this year, will show his gifts in a programme of his
own choice. Young and established soloists from the international concert scene
will share the platform with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra and the
Philharmonic and Proteus Choirs; and Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mozart:and
Tschaikowsky will receive the same dedication in performance as Bartok,
Hindemith, Stravinsky, Walton, Vaughan Williams and Delius.
