BAROQUE TREASURES
Saturday, 3rd March 2018 - 7.30 pm - Guildford Cathedral
We return to Guildford Cathedral for our first concert of 2018: a glittering collection of Baroque favourites
including
Bach’s
3rd Brandenburg Concerto and
Magnificat in D,
Handel’s stirring coronation
anthem, Zadok the Priest and Albinoni’s moving Adagio which many will know from its use in the
soundtrack of several films, including Ga/lipo/i and more recently, Manchester by the Sea.
Bach’s beautiful Magnificat in D is one of his most popular vocal works and is set on a grand scale — a
five-part choir and five soloists. The piece calls for a large orchestra, given its period, and we will be
performing with the Brandenburg Sinfonia, whose musicians are highly respected for the clarity and
interpretative quality of their playing. The work has a characteristic balance between beauty and drama
and is a must-hear for any Bach aficionado.
Join us for a reflective, uplifting evening of much-loved music which has influenced and inspired
composers, musicians and audiences for more than 250 years.

Following our triumphant performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony in November 2017, Vivace
Chorus returns to Guildford Cathedral on 19th May, 2018 with another firm favourite — Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 9. We've paired this with the darkly energetic and engaging Symphony of Psalms, by
Stravinsky, a programme which is guaranteed to deliver a memorable musical evening.
There will be a free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm in the Chapter House.
