Jeremy Backhouse
Jeremy Backhouse is one

of

Britain’s

conductors

of

leading
amateur

choirs.

He

)

has

been

the

sole

conductor of the Vasari
Singers since its inception
in 1980. Since winning the

prestigious Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year competition in 1988, the
Vasari Singers have performed regularly on the South Bank and at St
John's, Smith Square in London, as well as in the cathedrals of
Canterbury, Chichester, Winchester, Hereford, Ely, Peterborough and
Westminster Abbey. Jeremy and the Vasari Singers have broadcast
frequently on BBC Radios 3 and 4.

Jeremy is totally committed to contemporary music and to the
commissioning of new works. He and Vasari have commissioned over
20 new works in their recent history, from small anthems, to works of the
grandest scale: the most recent examples being an 80-minute oratorio
by Francis Pott entitled A Cloud of Unknowing (2006), and a glorious
Requiem from Gabriel Jackson (2008) which the choir will commit to
disc in 2011.

In January 1995, he was appointed Chorus Master of the Guildford
Philharmonic Choir, working closely with conductors such as Sir David
Willcocks, Jonathan Willcocks, Vernon Handley and Edward Gardner.
When the choir went independent and became the Vivace Chorus,
Jeremy became its Conductor and Music Director. In May of this year he
conducted a thrilling performance of Mahler's “Symphony of a
Thousand” (No.8), in front of a capacity audience in the Royal Albert
Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2009 Jeremy took up the post of Music Director of the Salisbury
Community Choir.

Dr Anthony Gritten
Anthony is a Fellow of the Royal College of

Organists.

and St. Alban’'s and

In October 2007 he played the complete

works of Buxtehude in a single six-and-a-half hour recital in St. Peter
Mancroft Norwich, to celebrate the tercentenary of the composer’s
death, and in 2008 he performed the complete works of Mendelssohn in
four recitals, to celebrate the bicentenary of the composer’s birth.
Anthony was a senior music scholar at Charterhouse, then an organ
scholar (and later graduate organist) at Peterhouse Cambridge.

He

wrote his doctorate at Wolfson College Cambridge on the subject of

‘Stravinsky’s Voices’. He has worked at the University of East Anglia, the

The Vivace Chorus
The Vivace Chorus has
two
music

aims:
of

to

make

the

highest

standard and
fun doing so.
The

chorus

to

have

has

established a reputation
for performing first-class

concerts
across
a
diverse range of musical
repertoire
and
thrives
under the exceptional leadership of its Musical Director, Jeremy
Backhouse, who is supported by Francis Pott - not just a very fine
rehearsal accompanist but a composer of international reputation and
concert pianist in his own right.

At home with the great choral works of Mahler, Brahms, Verdi, Bach and
Elgar, the chorus also performs 21st century music as part of our
‘Contemporary Choral Classics' series in which Jenkins' The Armed
Man' and Will Todd's Jazz in Blue' have both featured. In 2009 the
chorus commissioned a ‘Te Deum’ by Will Todd, some of which you
will hear tonight, and in 2010 they featured in the first ever recording
of this work.

The choir's most recent success has been a sell-out performance at
the Royal Albert Hall, where they performed Mahler's Symphony No. 8:
the 'Symphony of a Thousand'. Conducted by Jeremy Backhouse and
incorporating five choirs including the London Symphony Chorus
together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, this was an incredible
experience for singers and audience alike.

As well as singing at this world-famous concert hall, the 150 members of the
chorus have performed at Leeds Castle, Notre Dame de Paris, and St
Martin-in-the-Fields. Nearer to their Guildford home, concerts are given at

the Cathedral, Guildford’s ‘G Live’ and of course, here at Holy Trinity
Church. Further afield, the chorus undertook a highly successful tour of the
cathedral cities of Rouen, Beauvais and Paris in 2009, performing at each;
another tour is planned for June next year with concerts in Strasbourg,
Heidelberg and Freiburg.

This season's concerts will include

‘An Night at the Opera' at G Live in

March followed in May by a performance of Rachmaninov's 2TM Piano
Concerto and his choral masterpiece 'The Bells'.

Should you be interested in joining the Vivace Chorus, we rehearse in this
lovely church on Monday evenings. New members are always welcome, so

if you love beautiful choral music and want to have fun singing, please
contact Jane at membership@vivacechorus.org to find out how you can
be a part of our exciting future.
Alternatively, do visit our web site vivacechorus.org or follow us on

Facebook or Twitter.

of ‘Mass in Blue’ around the country.
The Will Todd Trio's first CD.’Sounds of Light’, was released in July
2008, as well as featuring as the basis for the larger Will Todd Ensemble
on Will Todd's ‘Te Deum’ disc.

The Vivace Youth Choir
The Vivace Youth Choir taking part in tonight's concert is made up of
children from Tormead School, Holy Trinity Church Choir and Holy Trinity
School.

The choir originally sang in the world premiere of Will Todd's 'Te Deum' in
2009 and made the CD recording in the following year. They have been
co-ordinated by Martin Holford, organist and Director of Music at Holy

Trinity and it is wonderful to welcome them back to perform two
movements from Will's glorious work.

Martin Holford
Martin Holford studied Music at the University of Surrey and was organ
scholar at Guildford Cathedral. He has been Organist and Director of
Music at Holy Trinity church since 1993. He is also Assistant Director of

The High Cs
The standard small brass ensemble is the quintet — 2 trumpets, horn,
trombone and tuba. It is a format greatly enjoyed by brass players,
whether they come from an orchestral, military band or brass band
background. Rather rarer is the brass sextet which adds an extra
instrument, usually another horn or a euphonium. The ensemble
tonight is such a sextet, formed specifically for this RNLI concert,
though the players know each other well and have played together in
various other groups. Our sextet's name, "The High Cs”, was the
brainchild of one of our players, Humphrey Haynes, a rather obvious
pun on the nautical duties of the RNLI as well as being a musical term!

On trumpet we have Wayne Filer and Dorinda Bray. Wayne is a
professional trumpet player with the band of The Royal Corps of
Logistics, but fills his leisure time by playing with St. Sebastian
Wokingham Brass Band - Dorinda comes from the other end of
England, Southampton — where she grew up in the brass band
tradition.
On French horn, Graham Morrill, who was also once a
professional army musician, plays in a number of wind bands in the
Thames Valley, primarily Woodley Concert Band, Reading. Our
trombonist is Paul MacNeil; Paul is an experienced orchestral and
band player.
Also a member of Saints is Humphrey Haynes on
euphonium — a virtuoso player in many musical genres. Finally on
tuba we have Peter Cole, who describes himself as being available for
anyone who wants him!

‘High Cs’ programme tonight continues with the nautical theme our
name suggests.

THOSE IN PERIL ON THE SEA
Nine years after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 one visionary man,
Sir William Hillary, founded a charity dedicated to ‘the Preservation of

Life from Shipwreck’. From that small seed grew the
Royal National Lifeboat Institution — the RNLI — which today operates
over 400 high-powered craft from more than 230 lifeboat stations.
