About the Mayor’s Distress Fund
The Mayor’s Christmas and Local Distress Fund was formally
established by declaration of trust in August 1971.
The Mayor’s Distress Fund (as it is more commonly known) is a
registered Charity with a clearly defined purpose:
“To provide financial assistance to the needy within
Guildford Borough, particularly at or around Christmas
time”
Over the years, the fund has had requests from all areas of the
community and has been able to assist both individuals and
groups with a wide variety of needs. Each request for assistance
is assessed individually against comprehensive guidelines before
funding is granted. This helps to ensure that donations are
spent wisely and that assistance is given only to deserving cases.
In the past, money has been provided from the Fund towards:
e Buying shoes and clothing for children in very poor
families
e Installing a telephone for very elderly and/or very sick
people
e Modest holidays for families, following a trauma in their
lives
.
e Playgroup Fees for needy children
e Basic equipment such as washing machines and cookers
for those who cannot afford such necessities.
With your help, we really can make a difference

This Evening’s Programme
Audience Carol
(H.J. Gauntlett arr. David Willcocks)
Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
!
Mary was that mother mild
3
Jesus Christ her little child.
He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and meek, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Savour Holy.
And through all his wonderous childhood
He would honour and obey,
Love, and watch the holy maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
:
We shall see him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

Audience Carol
(English Traditional arr. David Willcocks)
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day,
To save us all from Satan’s power,
When we were gone astray;
O tidings ofcomfort andjoy, comfort andjoy;
O tidings of comfort andjoy.
From God our Heavenly Father,
A Blessed angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same;
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name.
O tidings of comfort........
The shepherds at these tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flock a feeding,
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway,
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort... ...
But when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
" They found him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort......
The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert — Page 5
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace ;
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface.
O tidings of comfort....

Men.
(Melody from Piae Cantiones 1582
arr. David Willcocks)
Of the Father’s heart begotten
Ere the world from chaos rose,
He is Alpha : from that fountain
All that is and hath been flows;
He is Omega, of all things
Yet to come the mystic close
Evermore and Evermore.
Women.
By his word was all created,
He commanded and ‘twas done;
Earth and sky and boundless ocean,
Universe of three in one,
All that sees the moon’s soft radiance,
All that breathes beneath the sun,
Evermore and evermore.
'The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert —Page 7
Men.
He assumed this mortal body,
Frail and feeble, doomed to die,
That the race from dust created
Might not perish utterly,
Which the dreadful law had sentenced
In the depths of hell to lie,
Evermore and evermore.
Women.
O how blest that wondrous birthday,
When the maid the curse retrieved,
Brought to birth mankind’s salvation,
By the Holy Ghost conceived;
And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer
In her loving arms received,
Evermore and Evermore.
All.
Sing, ye heights of heav’'n his praises;
Angels and archangels, sing!
Wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful,
Let your joyous anthems ring,
Ev’ry tongue his name confessing,
Countless voices answering,
Evermore and Evermore.

Audience Carol
(English traditional arr.Vaughan Williams)
O Little Town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
~ The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert — Page 8
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
All praises sing to God the King,
All peace to men on earth;
For Christ is born of Mary
And, gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
Choir only.
How silently, how silently,
The wonderous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his heaven,
No ear may hear his coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him, still
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend on us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas Angels,
The great glad tidings tell:
O come with us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.

Audience Carol
(Charles Wesley arr.Mendelssohn)
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.
Christ by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing......
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald-angels sing......
Encore
We wish you a Merry Christmas !

The Choir continues to be conducted by some of the most eminent of
musicians, and as well as giving frequent concerts in Guildford, we
occasionally visit other cities in the United Kingdom and abroad.
In 1988, we visited Paris and in 1990 joined forces with the Freiburger
BachChor from Guildford’s twin in the Black Forest to sing two concerts,
thus beginning a tradition of collaborating once every two years or so.
Recent collaborations have been.....
o
1993 — Freiburg - Britten’s War Requiem, conducted by
Neville Creed.
o
1996 — Freiburg — Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, conducted by Hans
Michael Beuerle.
o
1998 — Freiburg — Handel’s Israel in Epypt, conducted by
Jeremy Backhouse.
QO
2000 — Guildford — Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, conducted by
Jeremy Backhouse.
o
2002 — Guildford & Freiburg — Dvorak’s Requiem, conducted
by Jeremy Backhouse and Hans Michael Beuerle.
The Philharmonic Choir is already planning two further concerts in March
and May next year and details of which can be found be found at the back
of this programme.
The Choir is always searching for new members to maintain is high
standard and auditions are held throughout the year. Rehearsals take
place on Monday evenings in central Guildford and new members are most
welcome to attend these rehearsals before committing to an audition.
For further details about joining the Choir or its forthcoming concerts,
please contact Noreen Ayton on 01932-221918.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF GUILDFORD
was formed in
The Rotary Club of Guildford
1921 and was only one of six such Clubs
that existed in Britain at that time. Today,
there are 1500 Rotary Clubs with one
million members in the UK alone. Besides
the original 1921 Rotary Club, there are two
other such Clubs in the town — the Guildford
District Club and the Guildford Chantries
Club.
One of the earliest fund-raising projects
undertaken by the original Club in the 1920s was the ‘Big Brother’ scheme,
which was launched to help youngsters who had lost their fathers during the
First World War. In 1927, the Club embarked on another scheme to raise
enough money to install several of the new-fangled wireless sets of the time
in local hospitals.
During the Second World War, one of the Club’s most memorable
humanitarian events was dealing with the reception of the survivors from the
beaches of Dunkirk, as they arrived back at Guildford Station in June 1940.
In the 1960s, significant contributions were made by the Rotary Club of
Guildford to the establishment of Guildford’s w
Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and the University of =
Surrey.
At the present time, the Rotary Club of Guildford
continues to raise money to support the Rotary
Club of Calcutta to supply vital eye equipment to
the Calcutta Eye Hospital and next year, it is
hoped to establish a similar scheme in Guildford’s
new twin town of Mukono in Uganda.
