A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
[ am delighted that the valuable

social work carried out by the
Rotary

Club

once

more

with

the

those

of Guildford

is

being

organised

purpose

of helping

less

fortunate

than

ourselves in the Borough.

The dedication and enterprise

of the Members of Rotary is an
example to us all in Guildford

of what can and should be done

by everyone.
I am pleased to hear that this
year, Rotary will be sharing the proceeds of their charitable

efforts between two worthy local charities — DISABILITY

CHALLENGERS,

which

does

so much to help disabled
children and the NUMBER FIVE PROJECT, which helps the

homeless in Guildford.
Congratulations on all your efforts.
[ would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for
supporting this -afternoon’s concert and to wish each and

everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New
Year:

Councillor Gordon Bridger

Christmas Night (French Melody. arr. John Rutter)
Star Carol (John Rutter)

Audience Carol

(English traditional arr. David Willcocks)
God rest you merry, gentlemen,

Let nothing you dismay,

For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day,

To save us all from Satan’s power,
When we were gone astray;

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort andjoy;
O tidings of comfort andjoy.
From God our Heavenly Father,
A Blessed angel came:

And unto certain Shepherds

Brought tidings of the same:

How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.

O tidings of comfort...

... ...

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,

And left their flocks a feeding.
In tempest, storm, and wind:

And went to Bethlehem straightway,
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort...

... ...

~But when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;

His Mother Mary kneeling down,

Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort... ... ...

'

The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert - Page 5

Audience Carol
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood

Each other now embrace:

This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface.

O tidings of comfort .. ... ..

Audience Carol

(J.F.Wade arr. David Willcocks)

O come, all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem:
Come and behold Him.

Born the King of Angels;

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,

Christ the Lord.

The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert - Page 6
Audience Carol

God of God,

Light of Light,

Lo, He abhors not the Virgin’s womb:
Very God,

Begotten, not created;
O come, let us adore him... ... ...

Sing, choirs of Angels,
Sing in exultation,

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above.
Glory to God
In the highest:

O come, let us adore him...

... ...

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,

Born this happy morning,
Jesu, to Thee be glory given;
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing:

O come, let us adore him... ... ...

Audience Carol

(English Traditional, arr. Vaughan Williams)

O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years

Are met in thee tonight.

The Mayor of Guildfoi'd’s Christmas Family Concert - Page 7
Audience Carol

O morning stars, together

Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King.
And peace to men on earth;
For Christ is born of Mary;

And, gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
Choir only

How silently, how silently,

The wonderous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings ofhis heaven.
No ear may hear his coming;
But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive him, still

The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray;

Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas Angels

The great glad tidings tell:
O come with us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.

Choir & Orchestra

Nativity Carol (John Rutter)

Here we come a-wassailing (traditional, arr. Rutter)
Sir Christemas (William Mathias)

The Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert - Page 8

Audience Carol

As with gladness men of old

Did the guiding star behold,
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright,
So, most gracious God, may we
Evermore be led to thee.

As with joyful steps they sped,
To that lowly manger bed,

There to bend the knee before
Him who heaven and earth adore,
So, may we with willing feet
Ever seek thy mercy-seat.

As they offered gifts most rare
At that manger rude and bare,
So may we with holy joy,

Pure, and free from sin’s alloy,
All the costliest treasures bring,

Christ, to thee our heavenly King.
Holy Jesu, every day

Keep us in the narrow way;
And, when earthly things are past,

Bring our ransomed souls at last
Where they need no star to guide,
Where no clouds thy glory hide.
In the heavenly country bright

Need they no created light;
Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown,
Thou its Sun which goes not down:
There for ever may we sing
Alleluyas to our King.

Children only

Away in a Manger
No crib for a bed,

The little Lord Jesus

Laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay.

Children/Choir

The cattle are lowing,
The baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus
No crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus!
Look down from the sky,
And stay by my side

Until morning is nigh.

Everyone

Be near me, Lord Jesus;
I ask thee to stay

Close by me for ever,
And love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children

In thy tender care, And fit us for heaven

To live with thee there.

The Arrival of Father Christmas
followed by his distribution of presents to children, whilst

the Choir and Orchestra perform Leroy Anderson’s ‘Sleigh Ride’.

Address by the Mayor of Guildford

Councillor Gordon Bridger,
introduced by the President of the Rotary Club of Guildford

Dr. Brian Arbuckle

The Mavor of Guildford’s Christmas Family Concert - Page 10

Audience Carol

Charles Wesley arr. Mendelssohn

Hark! the herald-angels sing

Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,

Join the triumph ofthe skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come

Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,

Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,

* Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Encore

‘We wish you a Merry Christmas!

THE ROTARY CLUB OF GUILDFORD
The Rotary Club of Guildford was formed in 1921 and was only one of

six such Clubs that existed in Great Britain at that time.

Today, there

are 1500 Clubs with a membership of one million nationwide and more
than 20,000 worldwide.

Besides the original Guildford Club, there are

two other Rotary Clubs in the Borough — The Guildford District Club
and the Guildford Chantries Club.

One of the earliest fund-raising projects undertaken by the Club in the
1920s was the ‘Big Brother scheme’, which was launched to help
youngsters who had lost their fathers during the First World War.

In
1927, the Club embarked on another scheme to raise enough money to

place one of the new-fangled wireless sets of the time in local hospitals.
In more recent times, the Rotary Club of Guildford played a significant
role in the establishment of the University of Surrey and the Yvonne

Arnaud Theatre in the town.
Rotary

Current projects being undertaken by the

Club of Guildord include the Training

in the UK of Eye
Surgeons from Calcutta for whom the Club has provided surgical
equipment and continued support for the Calcutta Eye Hospitals;

Helping School Leavers prepare for Job or College interviews; Sending
everyday necessities for use in Disaster Zones Worldwide;
Funding and Building Dams in Kenya to improve the access of local
people to the supply of water and establishing their new Guildford
Centennial Walk around Guildford’s Historic Town Centre to mark the
100th. Anniversary of Rotary in 2005.

THE GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir was founded in 1947 by the
Guildford Corporation to perform major works from the choral
repertoire with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. ~ Since that time,
the Choir has grown in stature and reputation and can now rightly claim
The Choir
its place as one of the foremost Choruses in the country.
grew to prominence under the batons of such eminent British musicians
as Sir Charles Groves, Vernon Handley and Sir David Willcocks. Sir
David remains in close contact with the Choir as its current President
and the Choir is now independent from the Borough of Guildford.
In March 1999, the Choir gave a widely acclaimed performance of two
works, which must surely rank among the greatest choral works of all
time ;' Mabhler’s Symphony No.2 — Resurrection and Bruckner’s Mass in
E Minor.
The Choir enjoyed a challenging and exciting concert
programme for the 2000/2001 season, with Mozart’s Massin C Minor,
Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem and Vaughan Williams® Sea Symphony.
The 2001/2002 season included a performance of Handel’s Messiah, a
charity concert for the Guildford Prostate Cancer Project of Mozart’s
Versperae Solennes de Confessore and Haydn’s Nelson Mass and most
‘recently, a thrilling and patriotic concert to celebrate the Queen’s Golden
Jubilee.
Last season, the Choir also performed with tenor Russell
Watson in two concerts : one at the.Royal Albert Hall and at Brighton.
Their current season has included a powerful performance of Verdi’s
Requiem,having combined forces with the Wokingham Choral Society
for the annual Guildford Borough concert.

The Choir is always searching for new members to maintain its high
standard and auditions are held throughout the year.
Rehearsals take
place on Monday evenings in central Guildford and prospective
members are most welcome to attend rehearsals on an informal basis
before committing to an audition. For further details about joining the
Choir or for information about any of our future concerts, please contact
Noreen Ayton on 01932- 221918.

THE GUILDFORD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
In

recent

years,

the

Guildford

Symphony

Orchestra

has

become

increasingly prominent in the musical world of the Guildford area.
GSO’s musical director is Darrell Davison under whose expert and
dynamic

direction

the

orchestra

has

built

an

excellent

reputation,

providing a considerable variety of music making for both audiences and
players alike.

|

The musical development of the young has, and always will be, one of the

main aims of the orchestra.

Each year the GSO holds the Jellinek

competition for young artists enabling five of the most promising local

instrumentalists to play a concerto movement with the orchestra before an

audience. The next concert is this series will take place at Holy Trinity

Church on 21* February 2004.
Through its partnership with Guildford Borough Council, the orchestra
has been introducing children to orchestral music at its Family Concerts
on

Saturday

mornings,

which

have

proved

deservedly

popular.

In

addition, the GSO frequently invites local children to become composers

themselves, writing Carols for Christmas or Easter and having them
performed at a major concert.
Another aim of the orchestra is to support local Charities at each of its
major concerts. Well over £20,000 has been raised in this way by holding

collections after each main concert.
Sponsorship and Corporate Patronage are essential for the financial

viability of the Guildford Symphony Orchestra, which can offer attractive
possibilities for co-operation.

If you would like to find out more about

this, please get in touch with John Daniel, the Chairman of the Friends of
GSO on 01252-727579.

Please visit GSO Web-site at www.g-s-0.0org.uk
