of Guildford
Message from the Rotary Club of Guildford....
‘ N Jelcome to the 1996 Family Carol Concert. As we look forward to Christmas, we must not forget
those who will be unable to celebrate due to lack of finance, whether they are young or elderly,
the disabled or the homeless.
Rotary International this year has taken the theme of “Build the Future with Action and Vision” with
the emphasis on young people. We are working for Life Education and Drug Awareness both in Surrey
and closer to home in the Borough of Guildford.
You will see the Rotary Club of Guildford in North Street and the High Street on Saturday 21 December
collecting money by the traditional Christmas tree outside W.H. Smith.
Today’s concert, in conjunction with the Mayor of Guildford’s Christmas Fund will contribute towards
a party for the elderly disadvantaged of Guildford, many of whom seldom leave their homes from one
year to the next.
We hope you enjoy today’s concert. Father Christmas will be giving all the children a small present: as
we watch them with eager anticipation, perhaps we can remember those who will receive very little at
Christmas, and give generously to the retiring collection.
Thank you for supporting us today. Thank you to everyone taking part, and
I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
Robert Chase
President of the
Rotary Club of Guildford

1996 FAMILY CAROLS
Once in Royal David’s City
Solo
Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around.
Jesus Christ her little child.
“Fear not”, said he (for mighty dread
Choir
only
He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
Had seized their troubled mind);
“Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind.
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
“To you in David’s town this day
Is born of David’s line
A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;
All
And through all this wondrous childhood
And this shall be the sign:
He would honour and obey,
Love, and watch the holy maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
“The heav’nly Babe you there shall find
To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid.”
Thus spake the Seraph; and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:
All in white shall wait around.
“All glory be to God on high,
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth from heav’n to men
Begin and never cease”.
1996 FAMILY CAROLS
AUDIENCE
O come, all ye faithful
Unto us is born a Son
O come, all ye faithful,
Unto us is born a Son,
Joyful and triumphant.
King of quires supernal:
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
See on earth his life begun,
Come and behold him,
Of lords the Lord eternal,
Born the King of Angels:
of lords the Lord eternal.
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
Christ, from heav’n descending low,
Comes on earth a stranger;
Ox and ass their owner know,
Becradled in the manger,
God of God,
becradled in the manger.
Light of Light,
Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb.
Very God,
Begotten, not created:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
This did Herod sore affray,
And grievously bewilder,
So he gave the word to slay,
And slew the little childer,
and slew the little childer
Christ the Lord.
Of his love and mercy mild
Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
Glory to God
This the Christmas story;
And O that Mary’s gentle Child
Might lead us up to glory,
might lead us up to glory!
In the highest:
O come, let us adore him,
O and A, and A and O,
O come, let us adore him,
Cum can-ti-bus in cho-ro
O come, let us adore him,
Let our merry organ go,
Christ the Lord.
Be-ne-di-ca-mus Do-mi-no,
be-ne-di-ca-mus Do-mi-no.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning,
Jesu, to thee be glory given;
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
1996 FAMILY CAROLS
AUDIENCE
God rest you merry, gentlemen
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Away in a manger,
Let nothing you dismay,
no crib for a bed,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
The little Lord Jesus
Was born upon this day,
laid down his sweet head;
To save us all from Satan’s power,
The stars in the bright sky
When we were gone astray:
looked down where he lay,
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy,
The little Lord Jesus
O tidings of comfort and joy.
asleep on the hay.
From God our heavenly Father
-
Away in a manger
A blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The son of God by name:-
But when to Bethlehem they came,
Wherat this infant lay,
The cattle are lowing,
the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus
no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus!
Look down from the sky,
And stay by my side
until morning is nigh.
They found him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling,
Unto the Lord did pray:-
Be near me, Lord Jesus;
I ask thee to stay
Close by me for ever,
and love me I pray.
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface:-
1996 FAMILY CAROLS
Bless all the dear children
in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven,
to live with thee there.
AUDIENCE
CAROLS
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth,
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Jeremy Backhouse
eremy Backhouse was Head Chorister at Canterbury Cathedral and later studied music at Liverpool
University. He spent five years as Music Editor at the Royal National Institute for the Blind, transcribing
print music into Braille, before moving to EMI Classics to work as a Literary Editor. Since 1990 he has been
a Consultant Editor for EMI and other companies, and a freelance musician. In 1981 he became the first
Conductor of the Vasari Singers, the chamber choir which won the prestigious Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year
competition in 1988, and which has recently recorded Herbert Howells’s Requiem. From 1991 to 1995 he
was Music Director of Streatham Choral Society and the BBC Club Choir, conducting many of the major
works of the choral repertoire.
In January 1995 he was appointed Chorus Director of the Guildford Philharmonic Choir. He works regularly
with the Kent Youth Choir and Kent Youth Chamber Choir, with whom he has recently toured in Italy. In
April 1995 he conducted the BBC Singers for the first time in a programme of music by Lennox Berkeley
broadcast on Radio 3, and has since conducted them in broadcast programmes of Holst, Rubbra, Massenet
and Delibes.
Jeremy Filsell
Jeremy Filsell was Organ Scholar at Keble College, Oxford, and studied piano with the late David Parkhouse
and Hilary McNamara as a post-graduate at the Royal College of Music. At the age of 19, while studying
with Nicholas Kynaston, he was awarded the Linpus, Shinn and Durrant Prizes for FRCO, and gained the
Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in the same year.
As a freelance pianist, he has worked extensively with individual singers and instrumentalists and with such
groups as the BBC Singers, Corydon Singers, Pimlico Opera and the European Contemporary Music Ensemble.
As a soloist, he has appeared in festivals throughout the country, and has made a CD of solo piano music by
Herbert Howells and Bernard Stevens. As a concert organist, he has played extensively in this country,
Germany and the USA and has recorded solo discs for Gamut, Herald and Guild Records.
Adrian Love
drian Love’s passport lists his profession as “Broadcaster”, covering a multitude of areas. He has
interviewed hundreds of top names, from actors to authors and from pop stars to politicians. His radio
documentaries have taken him around the world, from Hong Kong to Hollywood and from Blackpool to
Bondi Beach.
He started out as a pirate D.J. and since then has become one of the most versatile presenters on British
radio. Now happily in place as host of BBC Southern Counties Radio afternoon show, he has returned to the
“All-Talk” radio which first made his name.
Music has always played an important part in Adrian’s life, and as the son of conductor, arranger and composer
Geoff Love it could be no other way. Like many of his generation he was part of a group, playing bass and
singing. The singing continued for fun, and he is probably the only radio presenter to have appeared at
Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as part of a vocal trio run by the great jazz lyricist Jon Hendricks.
Adrian is married to Ros, whom he met at Radio 2. He has three daughters, two dogs, and assorted other pets.

Andrew Millington
ndrew Millington studied the organ at Worcester Cathedral under Harry Bramma and Christopher
Robinson. He was Organ Scholar at Downing College, Cambridge where he graduated in Music.
He became Assistant Organist at Gloucester Cathedral in 1975, and succeeded Philip Moore as Organist and
Master of the Choristers at Guildford Cathedral in 1983.
Since then, he has undertaken a busy schedule of concerts, recordings and tours with the choir, in addition
to the daily worship in the Cathedral. He is a regular recitalist on Radio 3, and has given solo recitals in such
venues as the Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral.
Guildford Philharmonic Choir
e Guildford Philharmonic Choir was formed by Guildford Borough in order to perform the major
choral repertoire with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as performing well-known choral
works, the choir specialises in 20th-century, particularly British, music.
It has recorded Gerald Finzi’s
Intimations of Immortality with the Guildford Philharmonic and Patrick Hadley’s The Trees So High with
the Philharmonic Orchestra, both recordings conducted by Vernon Handley.
The choir has worked with many eminent conductors, and as well as giving concerts in Guildford, it visits
other British cities. Guildford is twinned with Freiburg, and in 1990 the choir joined forces with the Freiburger
Bachchor in Freiburg Munster, and then in November 1993 gave an outstanding performance of Britten’s
War Requiem with them under Neville Creed.
This afternoon’s concert is conducted by the choir’s Chorus Director, Jeremy Backhouse, who was appointed
to the post in January 1995. The choir’s new President is the distinguished choral director Sir David Willcocks.
The choir’s next major concert with the Guildford Philharmonic is on Saturday 8 March 1997 in Guildford
Cathedral in a performance of Rachmaninov’s The Bells. If you would like more details about singing in the
choir, please telephone: (01932) 221918.
Guildford Cathedral Choir
The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first Organist
and Choirmaster. Since the Consecration of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained a daily sung
Evensong and has built up an enviable reputation for its singing. The boys of the choir are drawn from
Lanesborough and the Royal Grammar School, and the men are professional layclerks with choral
scholars from the University of Surrey.
The choir has made numerous recordings, including an album of Christmas Carols under Barry Rose
which recently won a Platinum Disc award for over a million records sold. The choir has toured widely in
Britain, Europe, Canada and the USA. It broadcasts regularly on Radio 3, and has made several TV
appearances. Its repertoire ranges from plainsong to the present day, and, in addition to service music, the
choir performs larger works with orchestra, including Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion, and
Haydn’s Nelson Mass.
