FAMILY CAROL CONCERT
Christmas is a true family festival when we remember the birth of our Saviour Lord Jesus Christ; and
in doing so remember those people less fortunate than ourselves.

Those people amongst whom have given to others, whether it be our time or our worldly goods, will
have experienced that inner satisfaction of helping and contributing to those around us. It is surely
more blessed to give than receive.
The Rotary Club of Guildford will be allocating the proceeds of today’s concert to our Mayor’s Christmas
Fund, a charity which does much to help those unfortunate souls who have fallen through the net of
our welfare state.
On an international scale rotary is a strong force fighting against evil in its form of deprivation. In
recent years it has been active in the third world, such as providing water in drought stricken areas,
providing centres in India to restore sight and helping to stamp out poliomyelitis in the world.
So let us enjoy today’s fine music cloistered in this cosy Civic Hall, but let us not forget the true
meaning of Christmas.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

AUDIENCE CAROLS
Once in royal David’s city
Solo

Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.

Choir He came down to earth from heaven

only

Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

All

And our eyes at last shall see Him,

Through his own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

And through all this wondrous childhood

He would honour and obey,
Love, and watch the holy maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.

It came upon the midnight clear
It came upon the midnight clear,

Yet with the woes of sin and strife

That glorious song of old,

The world has suffered long;

From angels bending near the earth

Beneath the angel strain have rolled

To touch their harps of gold

Two thousand years of wrong;

‘Peace on the earth good will to men,

And man, at war with man, hears not

From heav’n’s all gracious King!’

The love-song which they bring:

The world in solemn stillness lay

O hush the noise, ye men of strife,

To hear the angels sing

And hear the angels sing!

Still through the cloven skies they come

For lo! the days are hastening on,

‘With peaceful wings unfurled,

By prophet bards foretold,

And still their heav’nly music floats

when, with the ever circling years

O’er all the weary world;

Comes round the age of gold

Above its sad and lowly plains

When peace shall cover all the earth

They bend on hov’ring wing;

Its ancient splendours fling,

And ever o’er its Babel sounds

And the whole world give back the song

The blessed angels sing.

Which now the angels sing.

1994 FAMILY CAROLS

Hark! the herald-angels sing
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth,
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin’s womb:
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

God rest you merry, gentlemen
God rest you merry, gentlemen,

But when to Bethlehem they came,

Let nothing you dismay,

Wherat this infant lay,

For Jesus Christ our Saviour

They found him in a manger,

Was born upon this day,

Where oxen feed on hay;

To save us all from Satan’s power,

His mother Mary kneeling,

When we were gone astray:

Unto the Lord did pray:

O tidings of comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy.

From God our heavenly Father

Now to the Lord sing praises,

A blessed angel came,

All you within this place,

And unto certain shepherds

And with true love and brotherhood

Brought tidings of the same,

Each other now embrace;

How that in Bethlehem was born

This holy tide of Christmas

The son of God by name:

All others doth deface:

O tidings of comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy.

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoicéd much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind,

And went to Bethlehem straightway
This blessed babe to find:

O tidings of comfort and joy.

1994 FAMILY CAROLS

The first Nowell
The first Nowell the Angel did say

This star drew nigh to the north-west;

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,

In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,

And there it did both stop and stay

On a cold winter’s night that was so deep:

Right over the place where Jesus lay:

Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those wise men three,
Full reverently upon their knee,

They looked up and saw a star,

And offered there in his presence

Shining in the east, beyond them far;

Their gold and myrrh and frankincense:

And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night:

Then let us all with one accord

And by the light of that same star,

That hath made heav’n and earth of naught,

Three wise men came from country far,

And with his blood mankind hath bought:

Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,

To seek for a king was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went:

Away in a manger (Children)
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,

The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he
lay,

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay

Close by me for ever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

O come, all ye faithful
O come, all ye faithful,

Sing, choirs of angels,

Joyful and triumphant.

Sing in exultation,

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;

Come and behold him,

Glory to God

Born the King of Angels:

In the highest:

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

Christ the Lord.

Christ the Lord.

God of God,

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,

Light of Light,

Born this happy morning,

Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb.

Jesu, to thee be glory given;

Very God,

Word of the Father,

Begotten, not created:

Now in flesh appearing;

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him,

Christ the Lord.

Christ the Lord.

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC BRASS ENSEMBLE
The Guildford Philharmonic Brass Ensemble comprises players from the Guildford Philharmonic which is celebrating
its 50th Anniversary this season. The Orchestra was founded in 1945 by Guildford Borough Council under the Directorship

of Crossley Clitheroe. Following his death, Vernon Handley directed the Orchestra for twenty one years. Between 1986
and 1992 Sir Charles Groves held the position of Principal Conductor and has now been succeeded by Sir Alexander

Gibson CBE.

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir was formed by Guildford Borough in order to perform the major choral repertoire
with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as performing well-known choral works, the choir specializes in

twentieth century British music and this has led to recordings of Gerald Finzi’s ‘Intimations of Immortality’ with the
Guildford Philharmonic and Patrick Hadley’s ‘The Trees So High’ with the Philharmonia Orchestra, both recordings
being conducted by Vernon Handley.

The Choir is conducted by some of the most eminent musicians, and as well as giving frequent concerts in Guildford, the

Choir occasionally visits other British cities. In 1988 the Guildford Philharmonic Choir visited Paris, in 1990 joined
forces with the Freiburger Bach Choir in Freiburg Munster and in November 1993 gave an outstanding performance of
Britten’s ‘“War Requiem’ also with the Freiburger Bach Choir under Neville Creed.

The Choir is trained by Neville Creed, who was appointed Chorus Master in 1987 and he is assisted by Peter White.
Jeremy Filsell is the Choir’s accompanist.

Further details about the choir may be obtained from:

-Kathleen Atkins, Guildford Philharmonic, Millmead House, Millmead, Guildford, Surrey GU2 5BB.

GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL CHOIR
The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first Organist and Choirmaster.
Since the Consecration of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained a daily Sung Evensong, and has built up an enviable

reputation for its singing. The boys of the choir (20), are drawn from Lanesborough Preparatory School in Guildford and
some of the older ones attend the Royal Grammar School. The lower parts are sung by professional layclerks and choral
scholars from the University of Surrey.

During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings, including an album of Christmas Carols
which won a ‘Gold Disc’ award for the sale of over five hundred thousand records, and just recently a ‘Platinum Disc’ for
over a million records sold. The choir has toured widely in Britain and Europe and in 1988 undertook an extensive tour
of Canada, singing to capacity audiences from Ottawa in the East, to Victoria BC in the West. The choir broadcasts
regularly on BBC Radio 3, and has made several TV appearances.

In 1974 Barry Rose moved to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and he was succeeded by Philip Moore. He was appointed to York
Minster in 1983 and the post is now occupied by the present Organist and Master of the Choristers, Andrew Millington.
The choir covers a large repertoire from plainsong to contemporary music, including a wide variety of European styles.
In addition to service music, the choir occasionally performs larger works with orchestra. In recent years, these have

included Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ and Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’.

PATRICIA ROUTLEGE
PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE trained at Bristol OId Vic Theatre School and made her first professional appearance at Liverpool
Playhouse as Hippolyta inA Midsummer Night's Dream. Her first London appearance was in Sheridan’s The Duenna and
her Broadway debut was made in a British play, How"s the World Treating You? which won her a Whitbread Award. The

where this season, she played Mrs. Malaprop in The Rivals and Miss Dyott in The Schoolmistress.
London successes she recalls with pleasure are The Magistrate (Cambridge Theatre), Cowardy Custard (Mermaid),
Dandy Dick (Garrick), Noises Off (Savoy), When We Are Married (Whitehall) and Carousel at the Royal National
Theatre. Her performance as Queen Margaret in Richard Il for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984 won her
considerable acclaim and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In 1988 she won the Laurence Olivier Award for the
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Musical for her memorable portrayal of the Old Lady in Leonard Bernstein’s
Candide at the Old Vic.

Her poignant portrayal of Alan Bennett’s lonely spinster in A Woman of No Importance won her the Broadcasting Press
Guild (CriticsTM) Award for 1984 and Bennett’s A Lady of Letters (both plays written especially for her) earned her a 1988
BAFTA nomination as Best Television Actress. In 1991 she performed these monologues in the theatre for the first time
under the title Talking Heads at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, followed by a highly successful season of them at the
Comedy Theatre, London in which she co-starred with Alan Bennett.
Her one-woman show, Come For the Ride, a celebration of live entertainment, had its premiere in her home town of
Birkenhead in 1988 and has since played at festivals and venues throughout the UK. After a short season of the Playhouse,
London and at Greenwich, the culmination in 1991 was a gala performance before HRH the Princess Royal at the Bristol
Old Vic Theatre in aid of the Save the Children Fund.
Her BBC Radio work includes Noel Coward’s Private Lives and Present Laughter with Paul Scofield; The Cherry
Orchard, The Beggar's Opera, Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass (the latter two with scores by
Carl Davis); Desert Island Discs with Roy Plomley; readings for Woman's Hour; David Cook’s Missing Persons for A
Book at Bedtime, and the much- praised series Beachcomber By The Way. For Cover to Cover Cassettes she has recorded
Wuthering Heights in its entirety, Alice in Wonderland and some of the Beatrix Potter tales. As well as
recording various cast albums of shows she has appeared in, she has made her own album, Presenting Patricia Routledge,
for RCA.

Her many television appearances include the BBC Omnibus programmes Hildegard of Bingen and the documentary for
the BBC’s Bookmark series, Miss Pym’s Day Out, in which she represented the writer Barbara Pym. Her portrayal or
Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet!) in the BBC television comedy series Keeping Up Appearances earned her the
title of Top Television Comedy Actress for 1991. In the same year the Grand Order of Water Rats pronounced her
Personality or the Year and in 1993 she was similarly honoured by the Variety Club of Great Britain. Patricia was
rewarded an OBE in the 1993 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the Performing Arts..

NEVILLE CREED - CONDUCTOR

Neville Creed began his conducting career whilst a choral scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. He then became Director
of Choral Music at Tiffin School in Kingston-upon-Thames, providing choirs for several highly acclaimed recordings for
radio, television and disc. The Tiffin Boys’ Choir recording of Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the London Philharmonic
Orchestra under Klaus Tennstedt gained a nomination for a ‘Grammy’ Award. During this time he became conductor of
the Milton Keynes Chorale and Assistant Chorus Master of the London Philharmonic Choir.

In 1986 he was awarded a scholarship to study conducting at The Guildhall School of Music where he won the Ricordi
Conducting Prize. Whilst at the Guildhall he conducted the second British staging of the opera ‘Julietta’ by Martinu.
Since completing his studies, he has founded the London Musici Singers, been appointed Musical Director of the
Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the Guildford Philharmonic Choir as well as being invited to return to the Guildhall
to conduct. In 1988 he won the second prize in the First International Choral Conducting Competition held in Italy and
in 1991 won a semi-final prize in the Leeds competition for Orchestral Conducting.
In 1990 he conducted the European Community Chamber Orchestra in France and regularly conducts in Denmark. He
has given concerts with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Guildford Philharmonic
