THE GUILDFORD ROTARY CLUB - A MESSAGE AT CHRISTMAS
Welcome to the annual Family Carol Concert, now so much a traditional part of Christmas in
:
our town.
Each year the happy partnership of Orchestra, Choir, Municipal and Rotary interests join to give
us a programme blending novelty with familiar favourites but always giving us something to enjoy
and remember.
Content and style may change but continuity year to year is ensured by the giving of the proceeds
to the Mayor of Guildford’s Charities. In the New Year, and linked to this concert, the Rotary
Club of Guildford will be organising a party, on behalf of the Mayor of Guildford, for our Senior
Citizens
- it’s always a popular event.
Rotarians are proud of their long association with the Borough, for example, in leading such projects
as the School of Nursing Appeal, of the Service they are privileged to give individuals through
their vocations and together as a Club through organising events like tomorrow evening’s High
Street Shopping evening for the disabled.
Because Rotary is worldwide, some of the money we raise throughout the year goes on such
things as student exchanges. We currently have two young people from the Phillipines and the
USA attached to our Club during their scholarships at the University of Surrey. On a more global
scale, projects such as the £50 million Polio Plus Campaign, to clear polio from developing countries,
is perhaps an outstanding example.
Thank you very much for your support today - enjoy your afternoon.
I wish you all a Peaceful and Joyful Christmas.

AUDIENCE CAROLS
Once in Royal David’s City
All
Once in Royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child
Choir only
:
He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall.
With the poor and mean and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy
All
And through all his wondrous childhood
He would honour and obey.
Love and watch the lowly maiden,
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.
And our eyes at last shall see Him,
Through his own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above:
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by
We shall see Him; but in heaven
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.
See Amid the Winter’s Snow
See amid the winter’s snow, born for us on earth below;
See the tender Lamb appears, promised from eternal years:
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jeruusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Lo, within a manger lies he who built the starry skies;
He who, throned in height sublime,
Sits amid the cherubim:

CAROLS
Sacred Infant, all divine, what a tender love was thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this!
Teach, o teach us, Holy Child,
By thy face so meek and mild,
;
Teach us to remember thee, in thy sweet humility:
God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen
God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour was born upon this day,
To save us all from Satan’s power,
When we were gone astray:
O tidings of comfort and joy
From God our heavenly Father, a blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds bought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The son of God by name:
O tidings of comfort and joy
The shepherds at those tidings, rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethlehem straightway
This blessed babe to find:
O tidings of comfort and joy
But when to Bethlehem they came, whereat this infant lay,
They found him in a manger, where oxen feed on hay;
His mother Mary kneeling,
Unto the Lord did pray:
O tidings of comfort and joy
Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place,
and with true love and brotherhood
_Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface:
O tidings of comfort and joy
O Little Town of Bethlehem
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

FAMILY CAROLS
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the Holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King
And peace to men on earth;
For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
How silently, how silently,
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his Heaven.
No ear may hear his coming:
but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him, still
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born to us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell:
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.
Good King Wenceslas
All
Good King Wenceslas looked out
Out on the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even:
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Gath’ring winter fuel.
Men
‘Hither, page, and stand by me,
If thou know’st it, telling.
Yonder peasant who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?’
‘Sire, he lives a good league hence,
Underneath the mountain,
Right against the forest fence
By St. Agnes fountain.’
Ladies
Men
All
‘Bring me flesh and bring me wine,
Bring me pine-logs hither:
Thou and I will see him dine,
When we bear them thither.’
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together:
Through the rude winds wild lament
And the bitter weather.

All
‘Sire the night is darker now,
And the wind blows stronger;
Fails my heart I know not how;
I can go no longer.’
‘Mark my footsteps, good my page;
Tread thou in them boldly;
'
Thou shalt find the winter’s rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly.’
In his master’s steps he trod,
Where the snow lay dinted;
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men be sure,
Wealth or rank possessing.
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing.
Away in a Manger
(Children)
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love thee Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me for ever and ever me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.
O Come, All Ye Faithful
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant.
O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold Him, born the King of angels:
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord
God of God, Light of Light.
Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb.
Very God, begotten, not created:
Sing, choirs of Angels, sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
Glory to God in the Highest:
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning,
Jesu, to thee be glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;

GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra is the professional ‘Orchestra of the South East’. Founded
in 1945 by Guildford Borough Council, it has a regular playing strength of 75 musicians, led
jointly by Hugh Bean and John Ludlow.
The Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra gives a winter season of concerts in Guildford’s Civic Hall,
promoted by Guildford Borough Council with financial assistance from the South East Arts
Association and with the support and goodwill of the Guildford Philharmonic Society (the orchestra’s
active concertgoers’ society), local commerce and industry. This series has attracted national attention
owing to the regular inclusion of works by British composers, and its performance of ‘enterprising’
works, as well as the standard repertoire.
Since 1972, under the sponsorship of the South East Music Trust, which is supported by the
Musicians’ Union, concerts have been given over an area extending from Salisbury and Canterbury
to Ipswich. The Guildford Philharmonic also performs in smaller concert venues as a chamber
ensemble. Educational workshops and children’s concerts are a regular part of the orchestra’s work.
Sir Charles Groves was appointed the orchestra’s Principal Conductor in September 1986, Vernon
Handley, Musical Director from 1962 to 1983, is now Conductor Emeritus.
GUILDFORD PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
The Guildford Philharmonic Choir was formed in order to perform the major choral repertoire
with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as performing well-known choral works, the
choir specializes in twentieth century British music and this has led to recordings of Gerald Finzi’s
‘Intimations of Immortality’ with the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra and Patrick Hadley’s ‘The Trees
So High’ with the Philharmonia Orchestra, both recordings being conducted by Vernon Handley.
The choir is conducted by some of the most eminent British Musicians including Sir Charles Groves
(Principal Conductor), Vernon Handley and Sir David Willcocks. As well as giving frequent concerts
in Guildford, the choir occasionally visits other British cities. In 1988 the Guildford Philharmonic
Choir visited Paris and has recently returned from a successful visit to Freiburg.
The Choir is trained by Neville Creed, who was appointed Chorus Master in 1987 and he is
assisted by Peter White. Lynette Newman is the Choir’s accompanist.
On Saturday 2nd February, Neville Creed will conduct the Philharmonic Choir in a performance
of Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ and on Saturday 27th April Vernon Handley will return to perform
Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius’. The Choir’s plans for the Summer of 1991 include the performance of opera
choruses with the Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra in Petworth Park on Sunday 30th June.

CHORISTERS OF GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL
The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first
Organist and Choirmaster. Since the Consecration of the Cathedral, the Choir has maintained
a daily Sung Evensong, as practised in the much older English foundations. The choristers, numbering
eighteen, are drawn from Lanesborough Preparatory school in Guildford. Some of the older boys
attend the Royal Grammar School.
During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings, including an album
of Christmas Carols which won a ‘Gold Disc’ award for the sale of a million copies. The choir
has toured extensively in Britain, Europe and North America and has performed at many notable
venues, including St. John’s, Smith Square (London) and Notre Dame in Paris.
The choir covers a large repertoire from plainsong to contemporary music, including a wide variety
of European styles. In addition to service music, the choir occasionally performs larger works
with orchestra. In recent years, these have included Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Bernstein’s ‘Chichester
Psalms’ and Honeggar’s ‘King David’.
The choir has been directed by three choirmasters since the Consecration: in 1974 Barry Rose
moved to St. Paul’s Cathedral, and he was succeeded by Philip Moore (now at York Minster).
The present Choirmaster, Andrew Millington, took up his appointment in 1983.
The choristers are in great demand during the Christmas period, performing in concerts and at
functions at prestigious London venues. The climax to their singing activities is the service of
Nine Lessons and Carols, held at the Cathedral at 4.00 p.m. on Christmas Day.
GUY SINER - PRESENTER
One of the few American actors to be named in Debrett, Guy Siner was born in New York
City of an English mother and American father. Although he spent his early years in New York
and Connecticut, Guy was educated in England and now lives in London where he has become
known as one of England’s foremost actors.
Guy Siner trained for the stage at the Webber Douglas Academy, where he won the Rodney
Millington Award for his performance as the MC in ‘Cabaret’. He made his first London appearance
in the highly acclaimed ‘Cowardy Custard’ at the Mermaid Theatre. Other London credits include
‘Off The Peg’, ‘Nickleby and Me’, “Toad of Toad Hall’, ‘The Frogs’, ‘Wealth’ and ‘The Biograph
Girl’. He has also appeared in cabaret at The Ritz.
" Guy has worked with many of the leading English repertory companies including Coventry, Leicester,
Brighton, Windsor, Oxford and The Bristol Old Vic. Six major tours with the Cambridge Theatre
Company have taken him all over the United Kingdom, in a repertoire mainly of the classics
including ‘The Master Builder’, “The Relapse’ ‘Uncle Vanya’ and ‘An Inspector Calls’. He appeared
in Sheridan Morley’s ‘Noel and Gertie’ at various theatres, and with Derek Nimmo’s company
he appeared in ‘The Sunshine Boys’ and ‘Barefoot in the Park’ in the Middle and Far East (giving
him the rare opportunity to work in his native New York accent), and in ‘How the Other Half
Loves’ at the Bermuda Festival. In America he played in a revival of ‘Peg O’ My Heart’. Last
year he played Charles Condomine in a Number one tour of ‘Blithe Spirit’, and toured Australia
with the stage show of *Allo ’Allo!

~ world including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, as well as all over Europe, Africa,
South America and the Middle and Far East.
Guy Siner is aged 42 and lives in London’s Belgravia in a Mews house which he converted himself.
He is also a writer, enjoys fine dining and is an authority on French Bordeux wines.
NEVILLE CREED - CONDUCTOR
Neville Creed began his conducting career whilst a choral scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge.
He then became Director of Choral Music at Tiffin School in Kingston-upon-Thames, providing
the choirs for several highly acclaimed recordings for radio, television and disc. The Tiffin Boys’
Choir recording of Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Klaus
Tennstedt gained a nomination for a ‘Grammy’ Award. During this time, Neville Creed was also
conductor of the Milton Keynes Chorale and became Assistant Chorus Master of the London
Philharmonic Choir. In 1986 he was awarded a scholarship to study conducting at The Guildhall
School of Music where he won the Ricordi Conducting Prize. Whilst at the Guildhall he conducted
the second British staging of the opera ‘Julietta’ by Martinu. Since completing his studies, he has
founded the London Musici Singers, gained the posts of Conductor of the Bornemouth Symphony
Chorus and the Guildford Philharmonic Choir, as well as being invited to return to The Guildhall
as a conductor. In 1991 he has been invited to return to conduct the Royal Philharmonic ‘Pops’
